Strangely enough, a travel question...

If you were marooned on a desert island and you had your choice of ONE piece of music,
what would it be?
Dayle May 29th, 1999 08:27 PM

Anything by Mozart, or Gato Barbieri's "Europa".

s.fowler May 30th, 1999 05:06 AM

Bach's Double Violin Concerto. It would make me cry, but the three movements have very different moods and the polyphony is complex enough to keep me fascinated for a long time.
cassandra May 30th, 1999 05:35 AM

Variations on a Theme of Paganini by Rachmaninoff -- all the moods, including the most lyrical.

Martha B May 30th, 1999 07:28 AM

I wish I could say something by Bach, but when we were in fact stranded on a desert island, what we actually on board was Jimmy Buffet.

diane May 30th, 1999 10:59 AM

Gustaf Holtz' (?) The Planets. Because the different movements are SO different, there would be more chances to match my moods. Is that sort of cheating by calling it one piece? Of course, if you're on a desert island, does that mean you'll have anything to play it on?

diane May 30th, 1999 11:23 AM

Re previous -- if I have to make myself a recorder out of bamboo, I'm not sure what piece of music I'd want?

Cheryl Z. May 30th, 1999 11:44 AM
It'd have to be rock and roll for me! Something from Elvis, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, the Stones....
and I'd be singing and dancing the whole time and happy as a clam that no one could see or hear me!!

Amanda May 30th, 1999 02:09 PM

I'll have to say either the Planets by Holst or Canon by Pachelbel. :)

My two cents anyway.

Bob Brown May 30th, 1999 03:35 PM

Just one? I would put the Dvorak New World Symphony, the Beethoven 9th, the Sibelius 1st, the Tchaikovsky 5th, the Verdi Requium (Robert Shaw conducting the ASO)and Carmen in a bag and draw one out. Then I would fudge and take a second.
topoftheworld May 30th, 1999 08:30 PM

ONE piece of music, remember?

When I first posted this, I did not want to taint it by my own choice, which
happens to be Tchai's Swan Lake. (Now
you know).

S.Fowler: You deserved a mention in the great people that inhabit this board post, I did the other night. Sorry,I missed ya, and the same goes
for Bob Brown and Martha and Cassandra... really to all who
inhabit this space...

Michelle May 30th, 1999 08:50 PM

I would definitely bring Billy Joel's CD The Stranger. If I had to narrow it down to only one song, it would be Vienna.
s.fowler May 31st, 1999 03:54 AM

Actually a good Bette Midler CD would be my backup choice:)
Kay May 31st, 1999 04:23 AM

I'd choose Beethoven's Seventh Symphony. It's got everything, light and dark, contemplative and frisky. OTherwise, I would have chosen Mozart's Clarinet Quintet, but a steady diet of that would have eventually called for something lighter. Maybe, Let the Sunshine In from Hair. Ok Ok, so that dates me. Let It Be.

If this is truly a travel question and not just an inane space filler on this forum, perhaps the respondents could now identify on which desert island in Europe they would most like to listen to this music.

topoftheworld May 31st, 1999 09:28 AM

Islandia.

Martha B May 31st, 1999 09:37 AM

Definitely Yioura, near Alonnisos in the Northern Sporades. Stunning island. We worked as volunteers on an archaeological dig there-- just the archaeologists, the caretaker, and a whole bunch of wild goats. (What, you thought there weren't any desert islands in Europe?!??!!)

April May 31st, 1999 10:40 AM

For me it would be Beethoven's 6th, or his violin concerto (or just about anything by Beethoven), or Dvorak's New World Symphony. Hard to decide. And it would be in the Seychelles. Whether or not they have a desert island I don't know, but I've always wanted to go there. If I was by myself, it would be nice to be able to go to sleep to Bach's "sheep may safely graze" piece.
s.fowler May 31st, 1999 11:03 AM

Samothraki.
Not deserted, but isolated. There is no harbor so landings are touchy if there is a wind or high sea. When we were there in '79 there were storms all round. One of the lifeboats had quite the time returning to the ship.
It was also the location of an ancient mystery cult, and the place where the Athenian victory at Troy was conveyed via a beacon. [Historians correct me on this :)]
Outside of the small town near the dock the island was home to goats, ruins and olive trees.

Bob Brown May 31st, 1999 12:53 PM

But we have to pick an island that has electricity! I had assumed this meant the means to listen to it. If I just have the score, I can't hum but one part and it would not sound so good.
I forgot the Beethoven 7th; can we fudge and select an album that his multiple CD's in it?
