Storage of extra luggage
 

My daughter is completing a semester study in Rome . She originally went with two large bags. We are flying out to meet her in Rome to travel for a week. We will all have one bag to make train travel and connections easier. What to do with the one bag?1) Have her ship it home for approx. $200 , 2) store it at the FCO airport for $9/ day and retrieve it when connect from Venice to Rome to LAX 3) stuff as much as possible in our bags and dump the rest , bag and all? ( her teen clothes are cheap, so is bag) 4) have her lug it around Italy as we travel. Any suggestions are appreciated!

When I faced the same situation with my daughter, we shipped all of her stuff home except for one backpack. A lot of what she had was books, so it would have been particularly difficult to haul around Europe.

Storing the bag at Fiumicino sounds great, but if you have a through ticket from Venice to the US, you'd have no way to retrieve the bag. You'd have to get two separate tickets, and run the risk of missing your flight home if the first flight was greatly delayed. It would also mean that you'd have to retrieve all the checked luggage and recheck it, and go through security again. I would only do this if you could spend a night in Rome.

Maybe you (which I assume is you and your husband) could manage to get your stuff in one bag, which, for a week's vacation should be pretty easy. Then you'd still have only three bags total.

@bvlenci thanks for your prompt reply! You verified what I was worried about with the connecting flights. Which shipping company did you use to ship her items back to the states ?

She used the Italian post office, and mailed it off before I arrived. I don't know if this is still the cheapest route. I think they've got rid of their cheapest "sea rate" since then.

If you have a flight from Venice to the US with a connection in Rome, Termini station would be of no use either. I would try to travel very light to Europe so that you can put most of her belongings in the two suitcases you have. I wouldn't want to travel around Italy by train with large suitcases, though. For one week, you (her parents) should need very little in the way of wardrobe. If you each bring one half-empty medium-sized suitcase with you, don't you think you could put the contents of one of her bags into those two bags? That, plus mailing home some of the clothing and throwing out whatever really has little or no future utility, should do the trick.
