stops for road trip granada to san sebastian: salamanca, leon, other?

Hi,

We will be driving from Granada to St Sebastian (after doing Madrid-Seville-Granada) over 4-5 days via western Spain in the first week this June and were hoping some fodorites can help us decide on a couple places where we can stop overnight for probably 2 x 1-3 night stays en-route to san sebastian. 2 ideas so far are Salamanca and/or leon.

Culture, food/wine, architecture and cute villages are of interest to us. also any road trip ideas also welcome and also places to visit but not sleep along the way. Cordoba is probably our first planned visit but no sleep destination on this drive and Caceres is on my husbands stop not sleep visit also.

You can do Granada to León and then up the San Sebastián-Donostia without adding much time (about 2 hours) to the drive, but it is a long drive, almost 1200 kms, without detours.

If you want to stop in León, then at least spend the night in the Parador.

Cáceres‎ isn't really out of the question if you plan your route carefully and avoid going in or near Madrid. It only adds another two hours and 100 kms to the drive.

Great road trip!

Salamanca, Leon and Burgos are all great places to spend quality time! Love them all.

In Salamanca and Leon , I stayed at the NH Hotels. Both have terrific locations in their respective cities. Burgos, I stayed at the AC Hotel by Marriott which was also a very good location.

As Eobert suggested, the parador in Leon is wonderful.

I agree that the parador in Leon is a lovely hotel but it is further away from the majority of sites. Probably a good 20 minute walk to the cathedral. So, with limited time, I'd recommend a hotel closer to the sites you would like to see.

There are no good options closer in. The Parador is perfect!

Sorry but the NH Plaza Mayor was perfect! Especially my lovely, large room overlooking the plaza.
