stopping point on drive to slovenia
We will be driving from Ventimiglia, Italy to Purin, Slovenia. This is a very long trip, and we would love some advice on a charming small town to visit halfway in which to spend the night and enjoy a good meal. Any thoughts will be much appreciated.

Hi
I looked for Purin on a small map of Slovenia and couldn't locate it. What part of the country is it in? I've been to slovenia. If you're coming from Italy are you coming through Trieste? A good place to stop if you are is Piran [Pirano] in Slovenia. It was part of Italy for many years and the seafood is very good and inexpensive. Maybe you can elucidate and a better idea of where Purin is located. |
A stop on Lago di Garda might come close to halfway.

Sidley - How about Vicenza?

Dear Steve,
Vincenza is definately a consideration. Any thoughts on where to dine and sleep? Would it be more pleasant there than say,Verona,or padova? This is just one late afternoon and night, so we want to make the best of it. Thank you, sidley |
Dear Aeiger,
When I posted the question, I mistyped and actually it is Puran to which we are traveling for a few days. I've read that it is quite charming, and not a far drive from LJU, where we would also like to visit. You sound qualified to offer some comments/suggestions. Thank you, Sidley |
HAHAHAHAHAHA
Sorry, but I just had to giggle. ;;) The correct spelling is Piran. Puran is turkey in Slovene. Cheers, Jan |
I suggest Sirmione on Lago garda.

Hi
If you're coming from Italy through Vicennes and Verona. I recommend Verona. The colliseum is a beautiful sight, the squares in Verona and it is a nice place to visit. In Vicennes, we had difficulty finding a nice hotel, though we finally did. The city of Palladia is very nice. Verona is nicer though with more to see. If you mean Piran, it is a very nice, compact city. Has history and a great waterfront. We managed to stay in the old part. Cars were not allowed there overnight unless you were staying there. We had a room with a balcony facing the Adriatic and is was stunning. There are more touristy areas there, Portoroz and Koper but Piran was the best. We also visited the Postojna cave and stayed in Ljubljana several days. We had a hotel with parking. It's a beautiful country and worth visiting. If you enjoy seafood then Piran is a great place to visit. We were there in the early 90's, a couple of years after it became independent and the people were friendly. |
I was wondering if you meant Piran. Another vote for Vicenza, and Piran is lovely and very relaxing. Mario's on the Piazza is a delicious restaurant.
