Stop-Overs?
 

Can everyone please explain a stop-over to me and how I go about including one in my trip? We would like to make a 2 day stop-over in London either to or on our way back from Rome?

It depends on the type of ticket you're going with. Rewards tickets allow the stop-over. If you get internet tickets at very low prices they don't usually allow it. If you end up with higher priced tickets like in high season, you can do it. I have always used the reservation people when I make those type of plans. I'm not sure how to do it on the internet. You can also book a round trip to London and then a round trip on one fo the discount airlines like Ryan to Rome. Then, in most cases you have to change airports in London on the way to Rome. Sometimes that works out cheaper.

I've found that the best search engine for stopovers is Orbitz...click on their multiple destinations button and just put in all the possible itineraries you're thinking about.

You can often find stopovers or openjaw on cheaper tickets for example I'm flying:
San Francisco- Prague
London-Venice
Venice San Francisco for $630 including tax.

I found the fare (on Lufthansa)after looking at Orbitz but then booked directly over the phone with the airline because they could offer a wider selection of flights at that price which made for a better itinerary.
Also British Airways has a stopover option on their web search engine.

I think all the big airlines have a "multiple destination" option on their web sites. Sometimes that will be the least expensive way to go,you just have to check them all out.

Welltraveledbrit, you have tweaked my curiosity with your itinerary. It appears you have an open jaw between Prague and London. That's a pretty big distance for an open jaw, and I'm just curious if that's what you are doing.

If indeed my assumption is correct, then I would also assume that in order to assess the cost of the entire trip properly, you would have to include the cost of transportation (whatever it is) in the open jaw portion.

british air allows a stop over in london in both directions to european destinations..

example...next month i am travelling to berlin from boston....we fly to london for 2 days and then continue on to berlin all at the same cost....most airlines charge extra for stop overs....

the reason there's an open jaw section Prague-London is that because of the date I'm flying. If I add this section it will take me into the Christmas season and the ticket doubles in price. However, Prague-London (Stanstead) is available on Easyjet for $50...so yes there is a small extra cost!

The thing that amazed me when looking for the multiple destination option on the airline websites was that airlines like Lufthansa don't offer it...and others like United offered far higher rates than those I found on Orbitz.
