Stonhenge from Bath
 

Hello! I'm looking for information on the logistics of getting to Stonehenge from Bath.

We would spend the morning/lunch in Bath and hop over to Stonhenge for a tour in the mid-late afternoon.

Are there buses that run? Taxis? Train?

I have found some tour companies but they want me for the whole day and cover more than Stonhenge. Don't get me wrong, I would love to do a whole day tour but I don't have time.

Has anyone ever gone on just a 1/2 day tour?
Or did you just grab a taxi/bus/train and do it on your own?

A taxi is not cheap. I think it cost us around $200 for a roundtrip taxi excursion from Bath to Stonehenge and Avery. We did it an afternoon. Worth doing in my opinion.

Where are you going after Stonehenge? Back to Bath?

Back to London after Bath-this is a day trip for us.

It is really not easy to do a day trip London > Bath > Stonehenge > Bath > by public transit. "Hoping over to Stonehenge" would take sveral hours. Local buses are pretty slow - and as Marija says, Bath to Stonehenge (they added in Avebury) is too far for a taxi.

You best options are to rent a car for the day and drive from London to Bath to Stonehenge, to either Avebury or Salisbury and back to London.

OR

Take an organized tour from London

It is easy to do Stonehenge by public transit from Salisbury, but not from Bath.

Not for your group (seven adults) a car is out of the question. You will find the logistics of parts of of your overall itinerary will be complicated by the size of your group.

You will be better off taking a tour -

Well I am really debating what to do with Stonehenge. We are willing to take the train to Salisbury and get to Stonehenge that way- no problem.

I understand we'll be travelling a lot that day (don't know if anyone else in my group has figured that out yet). I can easily entertain myself by reading, journalling, or looking out the window (I was an only child for 15 years and am used to having to make do).

My brothers, on the other hand, may be rioting in the aisleway on the train(you may want to avoid Bath on July 20th).

I was toying with the idea of taking an overnight trip, stopping in Glastonbury, going to Bath early afternoon and staying overnight. The next day we could take a Mad Max all day tour that goes to Stonehenge and Avebury-but I'm torn as I've also considered eliminating Glastonbury completely and doing another day in London committing myself to doing the Bath/Stonehenge thing in one day again.

BTW this would just be my husband and I if we stay overnight in Bath, the rest of the group is on their own if we do it this way.

Of course, in this scenario, Bath gets gypped- we won't have a lot of time there.

Violet2 - as others have suggested, Bath to Stonehenge doesn't work well without a car, and even with one, it takes a while. It took us almost 2 hours to go from Stonehenge to Bath, but for us it was part of a 4 day weekend where we hit Salisbury and stayed overnight in both those towns (actually 2 nights in Bath).

I'd suggest, for ease of traveling with a large group, that maybe you skip either Bath or Stonehenge. If you want to go to Stonehenge, use the rest of that day to tour around Salisbury - a wonderful little town. Train back and forth from London to there, and bus to Stonehenge in between.
