Stone's Chop House?
 
On a trip in '77, my Mother and I had a great dinner at Stone's Chop House. Veddy British, with silver salvers covering the roast beef, etc. Seems to me it was off <BR>Trafalger Sq. Is it still there?

We too ate at Stone's Chop House in 1977. If I recall it was on Panton St, you went up a steep set of stairs and as you mention,it was very British. <BR>On a recent trip to London I just happened to pass Panton St and took a quick stroll to see if I could see it. Alas, I could not spot it. Maybe Ben Haines could enlighten us as to whether it is still in business.

I'm afraid that neither the current telephone book nor Harden's "London Rsstaurants 1995" shows Stone's Chop House. A good carvery I know not far off is in the Betjeman Restaurant in the Charing Cross Hotel, above Charing Cross Railtrack station. But it's now 25 pounds ameal, so I can't afford it. Nil desperandum. If you can make your way to Farrington underground station, you'll find the Sir Loin Restaurant, above The Hope, 94 Cowcross Street. Duck, Pork and Beef, all roast, all fresh from Smithfield meat market and never frozen at any time. Upstairs at the Sir Loin you pay twelve poubnds or so, but the food is good. Downstairs in the pub are joints of pork and beef ready for carving to go into sandwiches. Monday to Friday breakfast 7 to 9.30, lunches noon to 2, no evening meals. <BR> <BR>Another is the Albert, near Westminster Abbey on the corner of Buckingham Gate and Victoria Street. The nearest tube is St James Park. Downstairs is good hot food, with spices well used, served also in the evening. Upstairs for lunches only there's a carvery, three courses at 15 pounds. The house beer is Courage, but other and better draught is also served. Children are welcome upstairs for lunch but not down for supper. I used to cycle past the Albert, but somebody on Fodors a year or less ago reported correctly that it is good. <BR> <BR>Sorry I am late to reply: I must have overlooked your posting.
