stonehenge tour

My family and I will be traveling in July to London and wanted to visit Stonehenge. We bought heritage passes to allow us to see many sights prepaid, stonehenge being one of them. However, now we are realizing we need to find a way to get to stonehenge. Can anyone suggest a tour or way to see stonehenge without spending $100.00 per person? Also, we're hearing that some tours don't actually allow you near stonehenge because of some type of fence. Does anyone know about this?

Take the train to Salisbury, and there's public buses from the train station to Stonehenge.

There's a designated walk way at the site, which goes around the outside of the main "stones". So, you can't really touch them or climb onto them. But it's not like you're looking through a chain-linked fence.

My friend recently went to Salisbury by bus from London and saved a few dollars that way compared to taking the train. The downside is that it takes longer. You can also find those local buses from Salisbury to Stonehenge. I wonder if there's any package tours that will transport your entire group from London to Stonehenge direct?

I've also read about people booking a private "sunset" viewing of Stonehenge, which was amazing. It also allowed them to walk right up to the stones and touch them, instead of having to stand behind a roped area. Hope you have a great trip!

There aren't any tours from London that just go to Stonehenge and back because that would be many hours on the bus for just an hour or less visit at Stonehenge.

There have been lot of past discussions on this board of the after-hours Inner Circle tours offered by Astral Travels and others; just do a search to turn up plenty of info.

There are a variety of inclusive tours just under $100 to Salisbury, Bath and Stonehenge. For a little more $ and an eye-opening DAWN arrival, those same tours allow you "special access." There are several companies that leave from Victoria Station in London. I went to London during Christmas, and had just Googled to find tours that I could easily book online. Have fun!

Thanks for your input. We'll definately check into the train/Salsbury area. I'm not that interested to spend $400.00 to see old stones.

I had the need to get a train from London to Salisbury and the saver return was £37.60 (which is just over $65). You'll then need to get the bus from Salisbury to Stonehenge - so the journey would not be far off $100 per person.
Perhaps you would be better off on the bus. Another alternative, depending on the number in your party, would be to hire a car. Hertz do a daily rental for around £65 for a Ford Focus, inclusive of taxes and insurance (or around £100 for a next day return). Therefore, you'd get a car for the price of two people's rail fare.
