Stonehenge

Any recommendations for getting the best view of Stonehenge that we can? I've heard that you're kept pretty far away. Thanks!

Arrive at midnite on midsummers night eve naked and they will let you dance among the stones. A more realistic approach is late afternoon when the 3 hundred tour buses are headed back to London for suppertime.

Reply; Wh visited Stonehenge in Early May in the late afternoon. We practically had the place to ourselves. We found it well worth the visit. Also a great time for pictures.

How close do you want to get? You won't be allowed to touch the stones. Otherwise, I don't see any problems of taking good pictures.
Tom

Just returned from a trip to London that included an Evan Evans bus tour to Stonehenge and Bath. This was "off-season" so 11am wasn't as crowded as the summer could be.
I was impressed by how they have set up the path around the monument. It does 3 things- it gives you varied views of the stones. [BTW the closest view is at the beginnning.] Then the path drops down so you can actually get decent photos without lots of people in them. And they have two smaller stones near the beginning which you can touch. No - we didn't get to dance nekkid - but we saw Stonehenge under much better conditions than I expected.
My pictures are at: http://www.geocities.com/Paris/Musee...stonehenge.htm

We arrive at Stonehenge on June 20 (day before those naked celebrations. It was late in the day at about 4:30pm with a slight mist. I believe there where only 4 or 5 other people at the site. You get close enough to enjoy the site.

Sally and David, Thanks so much for the beautiful pictures. They made me even more eager to leave. We're not going till June 15. Thanks again!

Thanks for the kind comments.
If anyone wants me to try to give you the route we took along the Thames I can *try* - after the second pint it was a little hazy though :)

We were there on March 21st with a bus tour, and there's a pathway that leads all the way around, you get within 50 feet and I have some beautiful pictures. There's a gift shop and bakery, restrooms, the whole tourist bit. Enjoy!
