stone circles on Exmoor (Somerset and Devon) England

Does anyone have any experience of stone circles or other menhirs or stone monuments on Exmoor? I will be there at the end of June and would like to hear about anyone's experiences in this area.
Many thanks,
sj

Topping for you because I thought Exmoor was lovely, and I was fascinated by Avebury's circle in Wiltshire(?). I'll be watching for replies with interest. J.

Thanks so much. I am really looking forward to our trip to Exmoor. Does anyone else have any other information about Exmoor they would like to share. Special places to visit? Eat? etc?

Hi, sj, If you have time, visit Exmoor's website/s. I'm working from memory w/o notes or pictures, but I remember being impressed by Cleeve Abbey, and Dunster, and Watchet. But there were two more villages we liked -- one in the park with thatched roofs (name began w/ an S' maybe). I'm not being much help, but we did enjoy Exmoor very much as a long daytrip from Monkton Farleigh (village near Bradford-on-Avon), where we stayed a full week w/o ever running out of daytrip possibilities. The "S" town is Selworthy, a disappointment to me (it's a restoration). Also, Exmoor comes in second to Dartmoor and, of course, the Yorkshire Moors. I'm not aware of any prehistoric monuments in Exmoor...

Dunster, with both town and castle, is a favorite. Other favorites, though not in Exmoor per se, would be the village of Clovelly (a must-see IMO) and the beautiful cliff-top hikes at Baggy Point and between Woody Bay and Hunters Inn.

SJ- do you mean has anyone had any supernatural or otherwise spine-chilling experiences in the national park of Exmoor? Many, many stories abound about apparitions and other strange phenomena appearing in this area. I actually know someone who studied at Exeter Univ. who indeed claims to have had a very creepy experience there one night back in the '70's!

Not aware of stone circles in Exmoor, but it is an attractive and moody place. The village of Porlock is dramatic. I did stone circles in the Peake District (Nine Tailors and another whose name I've forgotten) and Stanton Drew (just south of Bristol) and of course the fenced-off over-commercialised Stonehenge, but the one that really absorbed me for a long time was Avebury, just east of Bath. It was amazing.
