Stockholm top 15

We are going to Stockholm this August. It is our second trip and we are looking for the top 15 sites. We were last there in March, so many of the boat rides and outdoor activities were not open. What are the best things about Stockholm? We especially love history, architecture, art, shopping, and are looking forward to getting out to some islands.

Sprin2: sorry I can't help. We've never been to Stockhom; will be going post-cruise for the first time this July. Since you know the city a bit, could you tell me about possible hotels for us? We'd hoped for the Grand, but at around $500 per night, it's too expensive. Can we find an excellent, quiet hotel for not more than $300? Want good location, good view, good space, etc. But quiet is highest priority. Do you know anything about the Hilton Slussen for instance? (tho would prefer not to stay at a Hilton) Thank you.

We were there a couple of years ago but only briefly as it was a stop on a Scandinavian tour. Surely you have dipped into guide books and are familiar with places like the Vasa Museum and Drottninggate pedestrian walk and the government buildings, palace. Didn't get to the islands but would recommend a day trip to Uppsala by way of Sigtuna. Oh yes, our party was at the very modern Clarion Hotel.

We'll be staying north of Stockholm so we're hoping to get to Uppsala and Sigtuna. Bill, can you recommend any sights or restaurants in either town? What about the Viking burial ground outside of Uppsala, is it worth a visit?

We saw the Vasa on our previous trip and Skansen too. We will probably return to both -- Skansen since the weather will be warmer and Vasa, because it is neat, we love old stuff, there is a new exhibit, and our boys are older. What else is really great in Stockholm? Has anyone been to Birka? Is it worth the trip?

Sorry Poss, when we went two years ago we ended up renting an apartment. Before we settled on that we researched hotels on the web and had a list. Nothing as posh as the Grand or Hilton, we tend to stay in smaller, less expensive places (when not renting flats) to help the budget.

Sigtuna maintains its historic character. We mainly visited the square and St. Mary's Church (incl. organist practicing and I got a CD) and then wandered around studying the ancient runestones. Didn't see the burial ground. Looks like Birka would be worth exploring.

Our main stops in Uppsala were the Palace and the Cathedral, oldest and largest in Scandanavia. And then we had lunch arranged for conversation with university students at the Bill and Bull.

I'm really more acquainted with Helsinki, Oslo, Copenhagen, Bergen than Stockholm which is a much larger city.
