Stockholm Suggestions Needed
 

We have tix to Stockholm booked (yay FF miles!) late August/early Sept for 9 days (2 of which are travel days). Just me and DH on a short vacation to explore a new city. We’re both in the design field and are interested in architecture, museums, shopping, and even spending an afternoon sailing. I am looking for any hotel suggestions, sites not to miss, restaurant suggestions, and advice on whether we should try to hit Copenhagen for a couple of days (we’d fly, not rail). We prefer smaller hotels with character and in the range of $200-$300/night. Thanks.

Cannot recommend a hotel ( stayed with friends) but can recommend Stockholm highly. Vasa museum, Museum of modern Art ( a great view from the restaurant), the national Museum, the City Hall and a view from its garden, boat ride to the Summer Palace, all of Gamla Stan ( the Old Town)....just loved the place.
You could go to Copenhagen for 2 day, it is a shot flight. If you can get a window seat, the view is great. Copenhagen is easy to see. Stay in the Nyhaven are not near the Tivoli The train for the airport is in the center of Stockholm and also connected to the Metro)
The only part of Stockholm that is not attractive is near the Central Station ( a lot of 60s stile ugly buildings.

Millesgarden and Waldemarsudde are both excellent museums as well. Millesgarden is the home and museum for sculptor Carl Mille and commands a grand view with a great outdoor garden. The Waldemarsudde contains a nice collection of art. The Museum of Architecture is adjacent to the Modern Art Museum.

Great shopping throughout the city, especially in Sodermalm where we expecially enjoy fabrics from 10 Swedish Designers. Lots of fun design and home stores all over. We also recommend the shop at teh Nordic Museum and the Skansen shop. You don't have to pay admission to browse their shops and they have lots of neat Swedish / Scandi items.

If you want to sail your own boat there are marinas all along the harbor. We rented a power boat near the bridge to Djurgarden, although there are lots of places to rent. If you just want to ride while others pilot, lots of options along the waterfront.

Stockholm is a magnificent city and wonderful for walking and exploring.

sprin2 - do you need to reserve a boat in advance? If we go to the marina on our first day, could we reserve something for several days later?

Great Munch selection at the National Museum. Believe there's also a Munch museum, but we didn't get there. Agree with nbujic regarding the Vasa museum -well worth seeing.

Take a stroll your first day and talk to the marina staff. They'll make a reservation for you and hopefully give some advice about which days might have better weather. It is all pretty informal and I suspect in late August won't be too busy.

We had a grand time boating around. Only spent a couple of hours but could have easily spent all day. It was fantastic to see the city from the water. Went through the lock connecting the sea and lake which was an experience our family cherishes!
