Stockholm or Lisbon ?
 

Hi.. We are a couple in our mid/late 20's planning our 4 week honeymoon in late July/Aug 2013 . We have narrowed down on 7 cities London, Amsterdam, , Prague, Stockholm, Barcelona, Santorini and Mykonos. However we are contemplating between Stockholm and Lisbon. Has anyone been to both the cities. Which is prettier, lively of the two? Which city has better food? As far as interests go we like hanging out at cafes during the the day, sightseeing, walking the city and getting a feel of it. Neither of us are much into museums and stuff. We like going out at night, not particulary clubbing but going to a nice lounge/bar and getting a few drinks. For some reason i have always been inclined towards Stockholm. I have only chosen Stockholm based on internet research. Please advice which is a better city to visit in early August. Please bear in mind money is not an issue. Any thoughts?

Check my trip report on Lisbon. We loved it there. Have not been to Stockholm, but it doesn't strike me as a place for 20-somethings.

Stocholm is stunning and very expensive. Not crazy about food.
Many areas with cafes and bars.

Lisbon has better food and is cheaper. Stockholm has more extensive "official" museums: The Wasa museum, the skansen, the armory, to name just some obvious ones. But Lisbon has some nice museums: The Gubelkian, the azuelos museum.

Stockholm is a cool city, lots of young people. It's stunningly located, lots of cafes & restaurants, great shops including Ilums Bolighus full of Scandinavian design. If money is not an issue go to Stockholm.

Just a heads-up, I had a friend who went to Lisbon last August and according to her, alot of places are closed or have limited hours in Lisbon during August due to local residents taking their summer vacations.

Loved Lisbon but had very limited time there. Always sunny, cheap public transportation and food, Sintra and Belem are AMAZING, and there's beautiful lookouts called mirodouros. It's a gritty, rough around the edges, poor man's Paris IMO. There's also a good deal of cafe lined squares and monuments if that's your thing

I like Stockholm but love Lisbon...

Personally, I would chose Lisbon for a honeymoon although I enjoyed Stockholm. Stockholm is extremely expensive which if you are trying to stretch your honeymoon dollar won't work. I know that you said that money was no object but you might not to be spending that kind of money for 4 weeks?

You say that you are into cafes,outdoor activities and culture-have you thought of flying open jaw in Barcelona and then out of Lisbon? Both have the nightlife and outdoor activity with great food/drink besides being very romantic for a honeymoon? I think that those two would be a great combination as you could even do day trips out of each city for different venues.
Or you could do some time in Lisbon and the surrounding area and then venture up to the north in Porto which is wonderful with its old town area along with port wine making,river area,etc.

As others have mentioned-alot of folks in Europe go on their holidays during the month of August because of the heat and you will find shops,restaurants,etc. are closed for some or all of that period throughout the various countries you have listed particularly near the Mediterranean.

I think that the food in Portugal is better than Sweden even though I love fish. The melting of the Portuguese and North African influences in the food whether it is a tapas or a full main is amazing!

Thank u all for the replies. I have allotted 3 days to Stockholm, will the same no of days be sufficient for visiting Lisbon and the surrounding areas? I really doubt that. As of now my itinerary is 6 nights London, 3 nights Amsterdam, 3 nights Prague, 3 nights Stockholm, 4 nights Barcelona, 3 nights Santorini and 4 nights Mykonos. If i do Lisbon i think i will have to omit one of the other cities. Suggestions?

The Gulbenkian isn't just a nice museum, it is one of the greatest art museums in the world.

Sintra, outside Lisboa, is a very special place.

I would go to Lisboa.

Lisbon is a must in any European trip, in my opinion. Being a Spaniard, it's a short trip for me, and even considering that, it's one of the places that I would go back time and time again.

I'm trying really hard to think about a better place in terms of value for the money, and honestly... I can't think of a better place than Lisbon.

Wow that is a lot of moving around. You need to budget in 1/2 a day (more for some of your jumps) every time you change locations so you are spending a lot of time in transit. I would personally drop a couple places and spend time enjoying where you are rather than running from place to place!
