Stockholm Hotels for July 2007
 

Looking for suggestions for hotels in Stockholm.

What location in the city is best for new travelers?

Are the prices usually quoted for 2 persons in one room?
At the Tablethotels website, I was not sure if the pricing was for one or two.

Any general information about the city, accomodations, dining, etc. would be appreciated. I have not been there for over 30 years. You will likely have been there much more recently. Thanks.

I was in Stockholm last year at this time. Mine was a winter experience so will differ from yours in the summer months. We stayed in Gamlastan, the old part of the city and it is a wonderful area for getting around. Lots of restaurants and shops. The shops and restaurants run from the "tourist tacky" to very nice. The area is close to the ferry, not far from the walking street, and the palace, the Stockholm Cathedral (from the 12th century) and the Nobel Museum are all in the area.

We stayed at a hotel called The Lady Hamilton. It has a bed and breakfast feel to it. The included breakfast was wonderful...lots of variety and plenty of it. The staff were very nice and the building itself dates from the 14th century and was full of all kinds of antiques and fold art. I would for sure stay there again, but having said that and one finds very few places are totally "perfect"..the downside..the hotel is so close to the Stockhom Cathedral you can hear the bells chiming all night. I was looking at the cannons on the quad at the palace and could see the bell tower from there and was wondering what the range was..LOL. There were a couple of nights they really bothered me and then there were nights I slept right through..so.hmmm. The rooms are small and the bathrooms were also small, but comfortable and very clean. In a building that old you really can't expect large rooms. However, they do have a couple of suites, one of which is shown on their website. They advertise airconditioning...not a factor for me last winter with the daily highs at 19 or 20 F. I don't believe ALL the rooms have air and that may be a problem in the summer...just depends on whether they have a heat spell or not and who knows at this point in time. There were a couple of other hotels in Gamlastan that I saw..one was the Lord Nelson, owned by the same people as the Lady Hamilton, and one other I can't remember the name of. None of these are "modern" and fit the area very well. I really liked being there. I believe all the prices quoted are two to a room with the exception of the few single rooms that the have. I got one of those for my neice so we would both have more room. So, this is just one of probably many possibilites you will get. I loved Stockholm and hope you enjoy your trip. It will certainly be warmer than when I was there. LOL

Gamala Stan is lovely but jammed with people all the time
Depending on your budget , you may be better off across from Gamla Stan. I think the are is called Ostermalm (?)
Diplomat and Grand Hotel are very exp. but something in that area may be better. The city is easy to get around - excelent public transit.
Stokholm is stunning in the summer ( I was there last July). Don't miss the boat ride from the City Hall ( one hour) to the Summer Palace!
The only unattractive part is near the train station. In the 60s some politicians decided to "modernize" the center of the city. Now, the office building around the train station look ugly and dated.

Hilton ( a view of Gamla Stan ,just across the bridge)
Some like Revel, but yoy have to take the subway to Gamla Stan from nesr the hotel.

If you have the money I would stay at the Grand and get a room overlooking the water. For that very special dinner then you walk over the bridge to Restaurant Opera (jacet and tie essential)

I was in Stockholm last July and stayed at the Adlon Hotel (www.adlon.se/). I think I booked it on Hotels.com, but the site I gave you is the hotels own webpage. It was a great hotel, and in July the prices were about half their "regular" prices. This was the case with a lot of hotels in Stockholm in July so you can really get some good deals. I liked the location because it was very close to the bus/train station (where the airport bus also comes in) and it was only a 15 minute walk to Gamlastan (via the pedestrian shopping street). But the street the hotel is acutually on is a very borning busy street. But it was quiet enough so if you don't mind no ambiance right outside the hotel door, then it was a great location. One of the best hotel breakfasts (included) I've ever had.
