Stockholm Hotels - $100-150/night

Hi, all, Looking for suggestions for decent hotels (in terms of quality and location) in Stockholm for $100 - $150/night. I have reviewed previous recommendations on this site for Gamla Stan (e.g., Rica City Gamla Stan and First Hotel Reisen), but they generally seem higher priced than this. Any other recommendations for hotels (in or near Gamla Stan or Central) or discount hotel sites for booking hotels in Stockholm would be appreciated. Thanks. John

Hi 2 points - The USD buys about SEK 10 these days, so it may be cheaper than you think Business type hotels Have special rates for tourists in the summer. Peter

Comfort Hotel near Central Station may be relevant.Cheaper at weekends.Try Bed and Breakfast in Stockholm too.

John, Most hotels offer good discounts in the summer and especially at weekends. Even the Grand Hotel which is one of the best in town offers a room rate of $150/double room incl. breakfast buffet if you stay over the weekend. Hotel Diplomat usually offers good rates as well,around $100/double room. Both these are in great locations with walking distance to all the central attractions of Stockholm. We stayed at the Radisson SAS on the water, just behind a big, expensive hotel and it was fine. Close walk to Royal Palace, Gamla Stan, and the shopping/restaurant part of the city. I believe it was about $120-try their web site. Radissons are equivalent to Marriotts in Euorope.

John: We stayed at the Hotel Rica Gamla Stan last year and I am sure it workrd out to $120 per night. The dollar ahs dropped a bit, but I can't imagine it is now above #150. We had a beautifully decorated room with a street view and loved the convenience of the location. It is a very nice hotrel.

These are the hotels I have booked does anyone have any input or comments ie are the rates good are the areas safe. The comments are from fodors Kong Arthur 129 denmark Built in 1882 as an orphanage, this hotel sits behind a private courtyard next to the tree-lined Peblinge Lake in a residential part of town. It's a terrific value. It has been completely renovated into a contemporary hostelry; a new wing with more spacious rooms, including 20 no-smoking rooms, was added in 1993. Each of the comfortably furnished and carpeted rooms has an in-house video and safe. Bathrooms are spacious and contain hair dryers. The hotel is equipped with a sauna and provides 24-hour room service and baby-sitting. Breakfast is served in a large greenhouse-like room that's filled with sunshine on sunny days. The hotel's Restaurant Brøchner is recommended for its reasonably priced Danish and French cuisine. A Japanese restaurant, Sticks [']n' Sushi, offers sushi and yakitori. There's a pleasant bar that offers 24-hour service and a glass-covered breakfast room that overlooks a back garden. The tea room restaurant and second-floor bar are ideal for a sightseeing break. 133 rooms. Restaurant, sauna, bar, meeting room, no-smoking rooms. AE, DC, MC, V.

Dina, In the summer of 2001 we had reserved a room at Kong Arthur in Copenhagen for a week. When we arrived, Scandinavia was having a heatwave, and after checking in we discovered the hotel does not have air conditioning. Our room was very hot. We asked for another room on the other side of the hallway, but it was not much better. My husband wanted to leave right away, but I was too tired to move, so we spent our first night there, then moved to the SAS Radisson Royal, which was great. Kong Arthur is located in a nice part of town, across the street from a river (canal?) and is within walking distance of many of the sights. It is located at the end of a cul-de-sac type narrow street, so if you plan on having a rental car, parking may be a problem. The rooms are decorated with dark wood in a castle-like(?) style. There was not much of a view from either room we saw, although we had requested a water view. The breakfast buffet was downstairs in a sunny, cozy room, and the food was good. If it wasn't for the unbearable heat, even with the window open, we probably would have stayed there the whole week. You may want to check out the SAS Radisson Royal. We loved it last year, and stayed there again this summer for a couple nights. The location is very central, across from the Tivoli and close to the central train station and the Stroget shopping street. The price this year for a nice suite on the 14th floor, was about $165. The price inludes a wonderful breakfast buffet. In Stockholm we stayed at the SAS Radisson Royal Viking this summer. It is also very centrally located, close to Gamla Stan and right next to the central train station. It is fairly modern, and they've recently added about 100 rooms, I believe. We stayed in a new, business style room, for about $130. Some of the rooms have a nice view, ask for one if you decide to stay there. Another one you may want to consider in Stockholm is the SAS Radisson Strand. The views are rumored to be even nicer than at the Viking. Location of both hotels is great. If you like the quirky Basil Street Hotel in London, you will like Hotel Diplomat in Stockholm. IMHO, both are terrific in terms of service, atmosphere and location.

Hi. I'm bringing this to the top because I'm having a similar experience to John. I'm trying to book a hotel for June. Right now the exchange rate is about 1USD=8.5SEK. Most of the hotels recommended are either sold out or are giving me rates equivalent to $200-250 and up (the best rate at the Radisson SAS Royal is over $300). I'd love any recommendations for hotels or discount hotel sites or consolidators. Thanks!
