Stockholm and What other City?

My wife and I are planning a trip to Stockholm in August. We have about 9 days. We would like to spend a few days in another Scandinavian city, such as Copenhagen or Oslo. Any advice on which other city is a must see? We are in our late 20s and enjoy everything from the outdoors to dining and the arts. What are some must sees in these cities and good day trips from Stockholm? Thanks in advance for your advice.

Both are great. In Oslo see the Viking ship museum and the Kon Tiki. In Copenhagen do Tivoli for an evening.

Copenhagen has nore to see/do than Oslo. But 9 days is kind of a rush for 2 cities since Stockholm has so much to see. I wold vote on copenhagen just to se Tivoli - incredibly charming - esp the midnight fireworks.

Today's NYTimes travel section has a piece on Upsala, which is near Stockholm and might make an interesting day trip for you. Enjoy.

Last summer I had 8 days and did Stockholm and Copenhagen and really enjoyed both. Good, cheap flights between the two. With that amount of time I also had time for a couple of day trips (to castles in Denmark).

Thanks for everyone's input. It is all helpful. The NYT article was great.

isabel, on your flights between stockholm and copenhagen, did you have to book those well in advance or was it more of a last second shuttle type of thing?

thanks

Yes, I booked the flights a month or so in advance, it was on Sterling. The flights were more or less full (there may have been a few empty seats) but I don't know how many of those were booked far in advance.

If you want to see my photos of those two cities they are at: pbase.com/annforcier

I had more time in Copenhagen than Stockholm, but actually liked Stockholm more and wished I'd had more time there (not that Copenhagen wasn't great too).

Hi
Just another few websites for cheap airline fares if you wanted to do just 1 city in scandanavia and pretty much anywhere else in Europe.

www.ryanair.com - Lots of routes round europe

www.flysas.com
www.aerlingus.com

www.airbaltic.com - which does lots of eastern european and russia.

www.skyeurope.com

There are also good links to the states from Ireland and the UK.

Had about the same time in July last year.
5-6 days Stockholm, 3-4 Copenhagen.
A very nice combo.

If you want something different I could also recommend Tallin, Estonia together with Stockholm. Check out the low cost airline RyanAir for amazing deals! Stockholm is an amazing city and August is a good time to go there! Don't miss the Vasa museum, the out door park Skansen and the old town "Gamla Stan"! Good nightlife around "Stureplan", cool and more relaxed bars in "Sodermalm". The metro is very safe and runs late, an easy way to get around.

If you had to choose between Stockholm and Copenhagen which would you choose and why? Or would you push and get a nite or so in each?? My time is limited and I want to do it all!!

I would choose Stockholm over Copenhagen. I found it a bit easier on the pocket (neither is a cheap destination); the people seemed a little friendlier; but the decisive thing was the places mesjl mentioned: Vasa Museum; Skansken Park; Gamla Stan. And boats and water.

Stockholm - more to see; also a more beautiful city.

Thank you for your quick replys! I plan on going to Iceland for 2 days to meet my daughter. We than fly to Bergen.
Should I plan 1 or 2 nights there?
I was thinking 1 night Bergen than do the NIN Tour and spend 1 nite at the Stalheim (or do I need 2 nights???)
Then continue the tour through Norway end up in Oslo and fly or train (which is best???) to Stockholm. That would give me about 4 1/2 days in Stockholm (is this too many??)
The timing is difficult to figure for some reason. Any thoughts, suggestions???

We were just in Stockholm for 5 days and then went to Gothenburg for 3 days. We flew back to the US from Gothenburg via Copenhagen airport.

If it were me, I would take the high speed train from Stockholm to Gothenburg and spend a day or two there also.

Then you catch the 45 minute flight from Gothenburg (small)airport to Copenhagen. I believe Ryan Air had $2.00 USD (yes $2.00) flights for one leg of a round trip flight, and from what we were told they are the low price provider. From what I saw at the Gothenburg airport there are about 6-7 flights going to Copenhagen during the day and it appeared many people walk up.

We spent a few days in Stockholm, then to Lund, then crossed over to Copenhagen. Made for a wonderful trip. Sorry, can't help with the Norway leg of the trip.

I loved both Stockholm and Copenhagen, but Stockholm is prettier. I too think the people in Stockholm were a bit warmer and more open than in Copenhagen. Everyone both places were very kind and polite, but I think the Swedes were more likely to be up for a chat. Also, in Stockholm the cars will stop for pedestrians and in Copenhagen, if you step into the street it's an excuse for them to see how fast the car will get from 20 to 60!!!! Bikes too, so watch where you're walking in Copenhagen.
