Stockholm 2 nights 1day
 

We are traveling to a wedding in Oxelosund late July 2011, 4 of us in our early 60's. We will be driving up from Copenhagen and want a quick look at Stockholm.
Considering staying at Raddisson Blu Royal Viking.
Open to suggestion on what to do and see in our 2 nights and one day.
Also hotel is charging SEK 125 each for breakfast, would be be cheaper to eat out, that is what we usually do but have been warned about high meal costs in Stockholm.
Yes I know we should be there longer but you can only fit so much into a 3 plus week trip from NZ.

Definitely see the Wasa ship. Drottningholm Palace is also worth a visit. And the Architecture Museum is also interesting, even if you are not normally into architecture. 125 sounds excessive for breakfast. You might consider heading to a market and self catering.

On Gamla Stan, you can see the changing of the Royal Guard w/parade -- it is surprisingly lots of fun to see -- walking at night through the old town and having dinner there is really nice -- especially so in summer. Definitely take a ferry to Djurgarden and see the Vasa Ship Museum. If you like sculptures, something not a lot of tourists do, but really just incredible (I think) is visting the Millesgarden -- it's the former home of Carl Milles, and a photo op at every turn.

We stayed at the Raddisson Strand -- got a deal with breakfast -- keep checking to see if they have "Summer Magic" deals -- quite often they do, and it will include breakfast in the price.

Scandic hotels include a huge breakfast buffet with your room rate which is a good deal in expensive Scandinavia. They have several hotels in Stockholm.

We too stayed at Radisson Streand and really enjoyed it. Thanks Surfergirl, next time we will try to see Millesgarden.

Just back from Stockholm! Pretty City! Agree with many posters...

With just one day (and take it from me -- we squeezed every HOUR out of our trip!) you may want to concentrate on several things you can do right in the city rather than head up to Drottingham....? Millesgarden, while AWESOME, will also take up a chunk of time since it is just outside the city.

I don't know what you are interested in, but my mother and I love the museums and we made the most of our Stockholm Card, which included public transportation (except the ferry) and all the sites we saw - totally worth it.

The public transportation system is very good -- you can get almost anywhere using the trains/subway.

Highlights for us were the churches in Gamla Stan, City Hall, Vasa Museum, Nobel Museum, the Palace (and their four musuems), Waldermarsude (the gardens will be gorgeous in July!), Historiska (Viking stuff & Gold Room), National Museum (Swedish Design & Art) ...

So nice to walk the streets of Gamla Stan at night -- cobblestone, lanterns lit, we always felt safe -- a lovely part of town and near your hotel.

I would go and explore the Old Town, see the Royal Palace and changing of the guard and then go and have a look at the Vasa - which is incredible. Also have a look at the Town Hall - where the Nobel prizes are given out if yo get a chance - very impressive.

Unfortunate you have so little time - since Stockhoml is worth at least 4 or 5 days.
