Stockholm - 0.5d sightseeing
 

Hello,
this will be my 3rd visit to Stockholm and I will have 1/2 day (morning) available for sightseeing on Sunday.
I will stay at the Sheraton & have already done Gamla Stan, the harbour sailing & Skansen. What should be next on my priority list?

Are you referring to the Archipielago Tour when you mentioned the harbour sailing? If not, then that would be my suggestion. Oterwise the National Museum of Swedish History (3-4 blocks from the Vasa Museum) is a must. I loved this museum, which I consider far more relevant than the Vasa (obviously I am one of those who thinks the Vasa is WAY overated...). Have fun!!

The archipelago, I'lll be able to see while sailing to Helsinki. Thks for your suggestion. Why did you like the N'al history museum so much?

We LOVED the Vasa Museum, and could have spent several hours there.

Do you have any specific interests or are you interested in checking off the BIG sites? If the latter is true the Vasa is probably the most visited museum in Stockholm, and it is very interesting. If you'd rather see art or shop there are much better suggestions.

I don't mean to highjack the thread but I'll be in Stockholm the first week in Jan. and shopping is ALWAYS GOOD. Any good ideas Sprin? But also will be watching this thread for any information that is left here.

What about Vasa Museum? I was there last week-it is excellent. Opens around 10am on Sunday I believe.

We loved our trip to the island Uto -- a highlight of our time in Stockholm.

Crefloors, My favorite shopping area is Sodermalm, walk up Gotgatsbacken from Slussen and there are lots of stores featuring Swedish design for the home, clothes, and coffee shops. I particularly like Ordning Och Reda, Gotgatan 32, selling paper and notebooks, Designtorget, Gotgatan 31,(in the back), with housewares, and 10-gruppen, Gotgatan 25, selling bright bags and pillows. You can easily spend half a day browsing on Sodermalm. Birger Jarlsgatan and Biblioteksgatan have more upscale shops, also fun for browsing. NK is my favorite of the department stores. It is an old fashioned, service oriented department store right in downtown. Vasastan, along Odengatan and Roslagsgatan, has lots of antique and this is a nice neighborhood to explore with fun little shops and cafes.

Tgnych, when is your trip? Many of the ferries cut back service after Sept. Uto is not the closest island and you'd be pressed to get there and back in a morning.

Sprin, thank you so much. I wrote it all down..wow the spellings..LOL. French is so much easier. My grandmother was swedish but never taught me any..my neice is taking Danish in Copenhagen so hopefully its close enough so that she can help me!!! Thanks again, I appreciate it.

I just returned to this thread and stand by my opinion 100%; the Vasa Museum is way overrated. Interesting? You bet. The most visited museum in Sweden? Yes, and that I considered to be overated. In a country of amazing Viking tradition, a warship built by the Dutch that sank in 20 minutes is an interesting story, but if you walk 3-4 blocks down the road and go into the National Museum of History, it is FAR more interesting and I certainly learned a LOT MORE about Sweden's history. Again, the Vasa TO ME kinds of reminded me of a Disneyland exhibit...
