The pound is now low against the Euro and so lots of Europeans are coming to London, if not the whole of the UK, so the loss of American custom is made up that way.
In addition the press and broadcast media are talking about British people holidaying at home. This has not yet been proven to be true. Some people are deliberately adopting a hair shirt approach for political or other publicity reasons.
Food is just really expensive in the UK so restaurants can't really absorb the cost and still pay the minimum wage to their staff and all their taxes.

We're going on a river cruise from Amsterdam to Basel in a few weeks, got a 2 for 1 deal, not including airfare, booked an open jaw, into Amsterdam - home from Frankfurt on Lufthansa for $590 p.p. but our credit card rewards program picked up nearly all of the fare except 150 USD, have booked a 4* hotel in Amsterdam for 2 nights total cost $192 so if you look hard enough there are some bargains.
