Still need suggestions for Rye England, but don't say Jeakes!
 

Nothing wrong with Jeakes, I know it is lovely and friends have stayed there........but I know parking is tight and there are many nice hotels and B&B's in Rye ..I would just like personal recommendations from people who have stayed at others.

Stayed at the Mermaid a few years ago..wonderful old place..but watch out for the rafters if you are over5'6"<BR><BR>excellent accomos!

We stayed at the Mermaid Inn in May of 2001. It was the highlight of our trip as far as hotels. I like bargains, but I also like something quaint, out of the ordinary, unique and truly of the past. This hotel is on a narrow winding street right out of the tudor times. It has a parking space behind with valey parking, and yes, it is a bit pricey, $250 at that time. But well worth the experience. Slanted floors, exposed beams, small stairways, beautiful decor, not elaborate, but approriate to the setting. We had dinner at the restaurant and next to us, within hearing of their entire conversation, was Paul McCarney, Heather, Stella and their friends. The Queen Mother has been there for a night and dinner. It has a great history and I would recommend it to anyone.

The white vine B&B is good, and a bit cheaper. Another good bed and breakfast is Aviemore, although it doesn't have parking right by the house but down the street.<BR><BR>Have to suggest the Mermaid as well, we are getting married there next summer!<BR><BR>

If you have a car, and don't mind driving into Rye, I can recommend Church Gates Bed and Breakfast in Cranbrook (http://www.churchgates.com) which has loads of historic character (beams, big 'inglenook' fireplaces, wood pannelling) and is very central for Sissinghurst and Great Dixter Gardens, Hever castle, leeds castle, pashley manor gardens, Scotney Castle and bodiam Castle. Fabulous home cooked breakfasts beautifully served on 'Spode' dinner service. <BR><BR>Cranbrook is a pretty little town with a beautiful church, windmill and museum and Rye is about 15 miles away. Tenterden is a pretty town nerby too with a steam railway,
