Still confused-Cahors or Figeac for 3 nights after 7 nights in Sarlat

I can't decide which makes more sense after spending 7 nights in Sarlat - Cahors area or Figeac area for 3 additional nights. For sure we want to see Peche Merle once we leave Sarlat. But in addition to that, would Cahors or Figeac give us more options for other sigtseeing and pretty driving routes? Is 10 days too much? Should we cut back somewhere? One other point is that we will be heading to Paris by train once we leave Dordogne.

With your opinions please offer some hotel suggestions. Don't want to stay in a cheap place but would rather not spend $400 a night either. Thanks!

We've spent 8 weeks in the Dordogne, 2 weeks just south of Cahors/Figeac near Caussade, and 2 weeks on the Lot River near Espalion - so we've explored that region quite a bit.

I prefer the town of Figeac over Cahors, but if I look at my map with all my favorite 'things" circled & annotated - there is much more 'stuff" near Cahors than Figeac.

Conques and Villefranche de Rouergue (nice weekly market) are about the only 2 things closer to Figeac - and each is only a 2-3 hr visit max (Conques is a *** in Michelin).

Around Cahors you have Peche Merle, St Cirq Lapopie. Via Freeway the Gorges de l'Aveyron, St Antonin Noble Val, Pennes, Bruniquel, Cordes, Albi, Castelnau de Montmiral, Quercy Blanc (scenic region), Montepezat de Quercy, Castelnau Montratier, Lauzeret, Montaigu de Quercy, and Penne d'Agenais. To the west along the Lot you can visit Luzech, Puy l'Eveque, Bonaguil Chateau, nice views along the Lot, and Villefranche du Perigord.

Do you have both my Dordogne and Languedoc Itineraries??? These sites, driving itineraries, and restaurant recommendations are included. If not, e-mail me at [email protected] & I'll attach them to a reply e-mail to you.

Unlike some, I like Cahors a lot, so I would probably spend a night there and then two in Figeac. I also love Villefranche-de-Rouergue, so there's another possibility. But all three are within easy driving of one another, so if you don't want to keep moving around, you can still easily see them all.

In Figeac, if you can afford it, stay here:

Hi IVS' We have been to that area a few times and if you want a place that is close to all of the towns you want to see, look at Gramat on the map. It is centrally located to the whole area, including all the towns Stu mentioned. This way there would be no changing hotels. I have two wonderful places to stay, one a chateau and the other a B&B. If this intrests you, let me know and I will re-post. Iris

Thanks Iris. Would like the names of the places in Gramat. I'll look at my maps when I get home tonight as I am out of town right now.

Thanks Stu for all of the sight information. That should make the decision easier. I can see that there will be plenty to fill 3 days. Again, my apologies for posting twice. I really couldn't find my original post yesterday. Both came up today. Go figure.

HI IVS; Sorry about the delay--we were in Florida. We have stayed in Gramat in the Chateau De Roumegouse. When we returned to the area our other location was close to Gramat in Rocamadour, in the Domaine De La Rhue. AGAIN SORRY for the late post. Iris
