Still confused about London Travelcards and/or Oyster Card

Please forgive me...I have read the posts and the tube site, and I still have questions. I would usually buy the 7 day travelcard and have it mailed to me in the US. From what I read people recommedn the Oyster card. OK..can I get the same price 7 day travelcard on the oyster card? Then do I pay an additional 3 pounds for the oyster? We will be in London 8 days...can I just buy another 1 day? I just don't quite understand the whole deal. HELP!

You've got it right. You can buy a 7 day card and then a one day card.

The deposit is refundable (and the card is transferable if you anyone else who might use it).

A seven-day travelcard costs the same whether it is on an Oyster card (from a tube station) or on a piece of cardboard (from a national rail station). Which is more convenient may depend on how and where you're arriving in London. If you're staying in central London, you'll probably want a travelcard for zones 1-2 (you can no longer get a travelcard for just one zone).
If you're arriving at Heathrow, the best option for your first day might be a travelcard for zones 1-6 which will cover the tube journey from Heathrow into central London.

Don't feel bad about being confused.

Most of us locals are just as bewildered by all the ticket options available on the London Underground these days.

Here's a solution: go to http://www.ticket-on-line.com/cgi-bin/web_finder.exe and order

a 7-day Travelcard for Zones 1-2
a single-journey ticket for Zones 3-6
a single-journey ticket for Zones 1-6

and have them mailed to your home.

Use the first two to get from or to Heathrow, and the third to go the other way.

Since the 7-day will overlap with either your arrival or departure day, use your judgment which to use it on. You probably won't do much sightseeing on the day you fly back, so that would be the most logical time to use the Z1-6.

But while we're on the subject - have you ever used the London bus system? You can usually get to your destination faster than the Tube (without all that walking and climbing), and for about half the cost of a Tube pass. A bus pass covers Heathrow, although using it for that would take a lot of determination (not to mention time), so you'd probably still get single tickets for that.

I agree with Robespierre, the London buses are great! I think the 1-day and 7-day travelcards cover buses as well as tube, so you can use both.

Here seems to be a big disadvantage of the paper 7 day tickets...

The extension fares...example as I posted elsewhere I just got back today from London and bought my 7 day zone 1 & 2 card on oyster...it was £22.20 the same price I believe you pay when buying the visitor's card....but here comes the rub...

The extension ticket to Heathrow was £1.80; according to the brochure if you pay cash for an extension to Heathrow which is necessary with a paper 7 day pass, you pay £3...round trip we're talking £6 against £3.60 and in non peak hours, the extension to Heathrow is £1....oyster seems to be the direction to go....even for 1 day passes if you do it with oyster and don't reach the minimum for a travelcard you save money. A 1 day travelcard on oyster is £4.40 non peak (after 0930 weekdays and all day weekend)...£4.90 with a paper 1 day card but but but....you don't actually decide to buy a 1 day travelcard on oyster...you prepay a fixed amount...so let's say you put £5 on your prepay and that day just decide to use the buses...the oyster bus fare is I believe £1.20 as opposed to £1.50 for cash but when you reach £3.50, the oyster automatically becomes a 1 day bus pass without worrying about it..same is sort of true with using the tube but the savings are humongeous...non oyster 1 underground fare an astounding £3...one underground fare on oyster subtracts £1.50 (assuming you remain in zone 1) from the prepaid account....if that first journey is after 9:30, next underground trip another £1.50 if that's it okay you're done but the next underground trip of the day, because of the capping is £1.40 and after that nothing more!

As I said, I don't know how this happened but when I bought my oyster card they didn't even charge me the £3 deposit and now I have one!

Oh it may not be clear....if you have a 7 day pass, nothing is subtracted. I was talking about with no 7 day pass just using prepaid portion of oyster.

Hello, I have another question about Oyster/Travelcard.
I´d like to get Zones 1/2 7-Day Travelcard, now I´m searching for a list of the extension fares, for I will be travelling to Zones 3&4 quite often.

Can anyone help me with this or tell me the general rules of extension fares? I´ve searched all the internet and couldn´t find a thing...

Thanks,

yo

Let's say you have a Z 1-2 and want to go to Heathrow. Go to the Fare Finder and define your "From" as a station in Zone 2 (say, West Kensington), and "Heathrow" as your "To" - and you will see that the Oyster fare is £1.80 peak or £1 off-peak. This is the amount that will be subtracted from your Oyster PAYG cash.
