Hey Waldo - check out the post on Quebec City - you could say something rude there as well

For your information, Waldo (not as if I feel I have to explain myself to you), but I never hire a guide, a car, or any other expert on a trip to Europe. I book my own air, do my own research, stay in apartments, and live like a local taking trains and whatnot to get from city to city, as well as walking everywhere within.

I often suggest Stefano here for people who are looking for drivers and I don't always know their travel situation and would certainly not think anything of them hiring a driver for any reason. Why would I give a rats *$$ if someone wants a driver, be it for airport transfers or a luxurious tour around Italy? Apparently you do, though.

In my particular case of hiring Stefano (once again the only time I've ever hired a driver in Europe in my life) it was due to my mother's mobility issues and I was taking her on a dream trip to Rome since I'd nearly lost her to death two years prior.

Yes, Waldo, for your freakin' information she WAS in a wheelchair. Does that mean she shouldn't be allowed to go to Italy? Does that mean she should't see the city of Rome? Does that mean she's being lazy for a health issue that she wishes she didn't have?

I suppose I could have forgeone using Stefano for airport transfers and a couple of private tours and just dumped her down the stairs to the metro or made her crawl along the sidewalk to see the city all the while saying "Pick up the pace, Mom! What's your problem?" Isn't that what you would have done Waldo?

What a pompous @$$ you are.

Ant, don't fret or apologize. I haven't opened this post in a couple of days even though I'd seen it topped. I guess with what I went thru trying to find a wheelchair to rent in Rome for my mom's surprise dream trip, plus make sure it would fit thru the door of our aparment, plus find a driver as wonderful as Stefano who was so patient with my mom's mobility issues, etc. Waldo's uncalled for comments just hit a nerve with me. I honestly never let someone's comments get to me here on Fodors, but his did.

I hope you find what you are looking for with a driver and that you have a great trip!

As a matter of fact, this wasn't my thread (I bookmarked it to get a hold of some car ideas) but I just booked Stefano today! He'll be taking us to/from the FCO on our trip and I couldn't be more pleased what with the recommendations and all.

I'm so sorry that you had to deal with the mobility issues but I am sure it was more than worth it. I don't have any children but I hope if I ever do that one takes care of me the way that you took care of your mother. What you did is something most would say that they'd like to do but would be too afraid to ever attempt so for whatever it's worth, I totally admire that.

Oh, Ant, I know you only bookmarked the thread for future reference and I'm only sorry that so many of us went off on a bit of a tangent thereafter.

I'm glad you got hold of Stefano and are pleased with his responses. He's a gem of a person and a wonderful driver and guide. Be sure to give him my regards.

And, have a fabulous trip! Thanks for your lovely compliments, but I didn't do anything more for my mom than most adult kids would do, even though it was a very different trip than I would have planned for just DH and I. I'm only glad she was still with us to make the trip and we've made another couple Stateside since then.

Enjoy your time in Bella Roma!!

Flying from California to Italy is not easy. So, my husband and I found someone to meet us at the airport and drive us to the hotel. So, what's wrong with that? Anyway, I have recommended Bob"s Limo Service many times in different forums and to my friends. Very good service. I think Bob has a lot of drivers and I understand that they are all good. Schnookies is definitely not a schnook to get that airport transfer!
