Tony Hughes Apr 3rd, 2002 01:23 PM

That was a bit harsh, Sheila-san!

Onlt two types of people in this world: 1)Scots and 2) People who wish they were Scots.

Heather Apr 3rd, 2002 01:33 PM

Well, not to comment on the side arguments, but to inject a little humor ...

I emailed the original link about the book to a friend of mine, who answered:
"I'm working on a report that shows the French do not exist. It would sell
well in France (if it existed)."

Cass Apr 3rd, 2002 01:33 PM

If I mention "Nessie," what comes to mind? Similarly, Ollie Stone had lots of Americans sucked in on the JFK assassination. The French do not have a monopoly on credulity, and just because a lot of people buy a book (go to a movie, buy a touristic Nessie doll) doesn't mean they believe what they read.

My sister saw the plane hit the Pentagon, folks, but that doesn't mean there aren't a lot of idiots all over the globe who choose not to believe in it, or the moon landing, or the Holocaust. Why don't we assume that because we're Fodorites, we're a bit above all that and not pick fights with each other over which cultural or racial group has less intelligence. The logical extension of all that has to be that the entire human race is just a shade below drooling fools on the IQ scale, no?

Sheila Apr 3rd, 2002 01:58 PM

I find I keep posting stuff on this thread, at a surreal level, and then keep banging into the bit in my psyche that makes me want to puke at the memory of what happened. So, sorry to be flippant.

But a) this book can only be drivel and
b) what do you mean Nessie??? My cousin's girlfriend's brother's seen it!!

Handmaiden of Fodor Apr 3rd, 2002 02:18 PM

You are thinking of Susan Olsen, John G.

jahoulih Apr 3rd, 2002 02:41 PM

That's Barbara Olson. I believe Susan Olsen was on the Brady Bunch.

A New Yorker Apr 3rd, 2002 03:06 PM

So, what was that plane that people saw from the highway crashing into the Pentagon? Where is AA Flight 77 and the 64 people on board?

The French.... when they aren't intoxicated with their own fumes, they are too busy with the bug up their ass. What do they know, anyway....

Tony, you got my mark, dude.

Doug Apr 3rd, 2002 03:18 PM

I'm not going to comment on the racist/bigot portion of this thread as it accomplishes nothing to either side of the argument.

However, my minister is a chaplain in the Navy reserves and he was called to duty in DC on September 11 to be present at the recovery effort. He was present when bodies still strapped in the aircraft seats were removed and conducted multiple prayer/counseling/ condolence sessions. He also had the unenviable task of being one of the "uniforms" who appears at a victim's front door to advise the family of their loved one's death.

A hoax? I wish it was.

Just Apr 3rd, 2002 03:41 PM

So Tony...why do you hate, dislike, diss, or whatever the French...I asked this about 20 questions ago and still you don't answer...have you forgotten in the meantime just what it is you don't like,,, it certainly isn't just this book ...you go on forever and ever and ever ad nauseum about them...what happened a French girl turn you down??

francoamerican Apr 3rd, 2002 04:15 PM

All the posts from Scotland were submitted during opening hours at the pubs. A little internet play with your wee heavies, pals? :*)

The trouble with ragging on the French is they make it too easy.

MaryC Apr 3rd, 2002 07:34 PM

Chicago Heather, what a fantastic retort your friend gave!! Still laughing...

Misery Apr 3rd, 2002 07:50 PM

Now if someone would just write a book and tell us that Tony Hughes doesn't exist.
This is all a great conspiracy to make normal people sit at their computers and hurl insults through cyberspace.
The French have enough to deal with. They have always had a problem with the truth of things. And this will just make them look more foolish, which is really sad because it is such a beautiful country, the food is so good, but who needs them!
The USA is a beautiful country and the food is good here too.
Florence Apr 3rd, 2002 08:53 PM

1) the French, in their vast majority, don't believe in that drivel, especially since most of them have been glued to their TV sets on Sept. 11 and as shocked as everyone at what happened.

2) the French press, in its vast majority, has debunked the story and called the author a maniac, akin to those who deny the Shoah.

3) the French, all of them, couldn't care less what T. Hugues and the few rude, self-important idiots who keep posting insulting comments while expecting to be treated like royalty as soon as they land on our soil think of them. (Bashing the French may sound funny, but remember your next waiter might spend some of his spare time reading this board ... ;-> )

They warmly welcome all the others.

4) this French would like her compatriots to be more careful with their hygiene, as are most Americans I have had the pleasure to meet.

April Apr 3rd, 2002 10:23 PM

The only thing that seems apparent here so far is that Tony loves the Scottish.

Tony Hughes Apr 4th, 2002 12:09 AM

April, some of them are really good looking! Plus my father Was a Scot. And my mother. Oh and me, too!

To explain my general dislike for the French would take a while - on of my many unwritten thesis' sitting in my head.

Try this link:
http://www.asile.org/citoyens/numero13/pentagone/erreurs_en.htm

I've come a full 180 on this one. I now firmtly believe Thierry Meyssan when he says no plane hit the Pentagon.

WOW! You're back?

Nikki Dec 26th, 2009 05:38 PM

For those who think everybody was polite and respectful in the good old days.

ThinGorjus Dec 26th, 2009 07:10 PM

Well, my post above was certainly polite.

I am a finishing school graduate, darling.
