staying overnight in a German monastery
It is my utmost desire to stay overnight in a southern German monastery. I know there are some who open their doors to travelers/visitors. I'm wondering if anyone might have any experiences/information to share regarding this. I have yet to research this online, but will do so as soon as I have some (rare) free time. Thanks!

I've stayed in some in Italy, but not Germany. I have a book that lists several in Germany. Which one were you thinking about?

Wow, I would have thought that this would be easy, but no!
A 20 minute internet search yields (for ME) only abteihimmerod.de, founded 1134 St. Bernard, accepts ovenight guests at 35E per person or Vollpension @ 40 E pp.(Town of Himmerod/Eifel region) AND Kloster-Marienthal -cistercian abbey-BONUS: site in english. I'll be interested to hear others responses (I thought there were many more out there). |
It's indeed a bit hard as those websites which list the monasteries are in German.

The lists above cover only monasteries in Bavaria. Browsing through some of the sites, I think that several monasteries offer rooms in their guest houses - on "campus", but not necessarily as part of the main monastery building itself. |
Depends what you expect. There are several monasteries with guesthouses in Germany, but most of those take guests for programmes, to join monastic life for some time or take part in classes, courses, retraites and similar. I cannot think of an active monastery that lets people use their guesthouse just like a hotel.
