Staying near Pompeii and other questions

We are staying in Rome for a week, then taking the train to Venice for 4 nights. My husband wants to see Pompeii (I was there 20 years ago). I'm wondering if we should cut one night from Rome, travel down to the Pompeii area, spend the night there, tour it for half a day, then proceed on to Venice? Or would it be better to just do a day trip from Rome?

In cse you're wondering, we're saving Florence for another trip where we can do it justice.

Do it as a day trip from Rome, since you would have to backtrack past Rome to get to Venice.

Hi dab

I would also do it as a day trip.

Take a look at www.enjoyrome.com.

You might also want to do a day in Orvieto.

I'd do it as a day trip as well. Otherwise you have to check out of your hotel, bring your luggage on the first train to Naples and then the commuter train to Pompeii. There is storage at Pompeii, but why bother with that at all? Leave Rome as early as you can and enjoy the day at Pompeii. If your husband likes it as much as we did, you might find yourself there for hours, and getting back very late to Rome! For that reason, I wouldn't wait until the end of your week in Rome to visit. I'd go in the middle of the week, which will allow you the luxury of sleeping late the next morning, if you need, instead of having to schelp on to your next destination.

Another option but a long day is do it on your last day in Rome. Leave your bags in the Naples station's left luggage, do Pompeii, return to Naples (dinner and alittle night sightseeing or the Archaeological Museum if open late that day & dinner) and then take a night train to Venice.
