staying in the 9th paris

we hope to explore montmartre from here, also st. georges area (near our apartment) and batignolles area. st. ouen. st. denis. we will be in paris for 10 days and have been to major sites before and will revisit some again but wanted to explore another area. any suggestions for specific sites in this area, restaurants, boulangeries, etc. we will be very close to the southern part of rue des martyrs. interested for the most part in walking distance. thank you.

Musee Gustave Moreau is close by and makes an interesting change:

You can do a walk up to Square des Batignolles, beautiful small garden:

Rue des Martyrs itself is a nice market street: (NY Times article)

On the corner of rue des Martyrs and rue de Navarin is, in my opinion, the best boulangerie in Paris. Their croissants have no equal. Their petit pains are wonderful as well, and their baguettes are famous (ask for the ones from behind the counter). There may be a line - get in it and wait however long it takes (they are quite efficient, so it won't be long). Also, quite close but across the street and down a bit, is a charcuterie that should not be missed, as well as a cheese shop. Sorry I don't know the names. My favorite wine shop is also near the boulangerie, on the same side of the street: the Cave des Martyrs.

Also worth visiting is the (free) Musée de la vie romantique in the 9th, home of a 19th century painter, Ary Sheffer.

I used to live in the 9th - I used to live in St. Germain de pres - but I was falling over throngs of tourists when I tried to get a cup of coffee - so after a year, I moved to the 9th. I loved it and its quite good for food.

Au Petit Riche

PETITE SIRENE DE COPENHAGUE

CHEZ GEORGETTE

Le Pré Cadet

Le Bistro des Deux Théâtres (cheap and cheerful)
