Staying in the 14th--recommendations, please!
 

I just rented an apartment for three weeks in October in the 14th on Blvd. Edgar Quinet right near that metro. Since I've never stayed in this arr. before, I'd love recommendations on restaurants, cafes, bakeries, favorite walks, secret places...anything you'd care to share.

I hope you get recommendations, but I will say that discovering such places on your own will make your trip special -- it will be "your" Paris.

As a way to start, look up the address on Google Maps, switch to satellite view, and magnify the result until you can see "your" neighborhood in roof-top detail. Then glide around through the neighborhood, looking for little streets and cul de sacs, switching to street view when you see something interesting.

You are going to be in the heart of Breton Paris with crêperies everywhere and next to the very interesting Montparnasse cemetery which is full of celebrities like Samuel Beckett, Jean-Paul Sartre or Eugène Ionesco.

There is a fantastic Italian restaurant nearby called Croccante. Great pizzas and pasta (Sicilian-style sauces), wonderful "charcuterie" and desserts to die for. Very reasonably priced, great ambience and friendly staff.
You should book in advance though.

I'd second the recommendation of Croccante...it's an excellent Italian restaurant. I'd also recommend the rue de Convention (around Convention metro stop on line 12 - come out of the metro and turn left - or take the 89 bus) and the Pasteur area (Pasteur metro on line 6, which is direct from Edgar Quinet, or you can possibly even walk; again it's served by the 89 bus too as well as some others) for a good selection of traditional Parisian bistros. There's also a cute little market on the square at the Pasteur metro station quite regularly.

^^ btw, some of that is in the 15th, but still none of it is very far away from where you are staying.

I'm looking for an apt in that area, BTW, which apt. did you rent?

I like the Bistrot du Dôme (though it's a bustling, sometimes noisy place and not haute cuisine).

Some good places:
1. street market along ave Edgar Quinet on Wed & Sat mornings
2. lively area of cafes (ok, some 'video' shops too) around Gaite & Edgar Quinet metros
3. several cinemas around Montparnasse
4. Musee Bourdelle in the 15th, quite a nice studio

Actually, my favourite Italian restaurant in the area was always La Mamma at 46 rue Vavin.
