Sandradee, I agree with what the others have said, this area is completely fine and I would have no hesitation walking around there by myself. Plus you are very close to Southwark tube station so getting back from town at night is easy. It will be less touristy than the usual central locations so you're probably more likely to see actual locals. ;-)
Make sure to visit Borough Market, and there are also two of my fave places there - Monmouth for coffee and Konditor and Cook for cakes. Mmmmmmmm.
Plus there are some good pubs in the area. This one serves nice food and is usually very buzzy - http://www.thesouthwarktavern.co.uk/
There are also some nice pubs along the river, as well as quite a few restaurants - including my guilty pleasure cheap chain faves - Nando's and The Real Greek.

Ah pubs............
Apart from the Charles Dickens, which is about two doors down from your flat, you could go all the way along Union St to Borough High St, where there's the George. Or up to Borough Market, for the Market Porter as well as the Southwark Tavern.
