faredolce: I like traveling both ways. I have done the whirlwind type of trips with one or two days per city and absolutely loved them. At that point in my life I wasn't sure if I would ever get back to that particular part of the world and I wanted to see as much as I could in the time allotted.
Now that I have a couple of decades of travel under my belt and have seen most of my "must see places" I tend to have a more relaxed attitude toward travel. For example, I have been to London many times, staying 1-2 weeks at a time and never tiring of it or running out of things to do. In fact, the familiarity of it is comforting, as is not having to do exhaustive research each time I go. Same goes for some of my other favorites such as Sydney, Australia; Amsterdam; and Malta.
I still will do the whirlwind travel if I'm going to an entirely new place. For example, I did six cities in China including Shanghai and Beijing in about two weeks. If I ever go back I would probably stay in Beijing and Shangahai only.spend gives me a general overview of the places I'm interested in and piques my curiosity as to those cities I would like to return to and visit in depth.
