Staying in Naples? or other Amalfi destimations
I am staying in Positano for 5 days at the Poseidon the hotel cannot accommodate my last stay so we have to either switch hotels all together r move to another hotel/destination. My travel agent suggested spending the last night in Naples since that is where we will be flying out of. Does anyone have any recommendations? I have heard that Naples is a little seedy.

Nicole,
You will find many old posts debating Naples. I stayed just 1 nt in Sept 05 for the main objective of visiting the Archeological Museum (highly recommend). I stayed at Hotel Pinto Storey *** in the Chiaia (SP?) district, very upscale and the hotel was just fine in a great location, right across the Piazza Amadeus from metro stop of same name. I traveled solo and felt completely at ease, even riding the metro. Several kind strangers offered little helps un-aked for. I would have loved to have at least a couple more days in Naples to see more. I would definitely recommend spending your last night there and trying to see at least the museum. I visited Pompeii coming from Capri, spending about 4 1/2 hours at Pompeii and arriving in Naples at rush hour on a Friday. Now that was a great taxi ride! |
Now I am thinking that I may split up my trip on the coast. Instead of staying in Positano for 6 days maybe I shuld visit two cities? Do you have any reccomendations?

Nicole - I'd consider 3 nights Capri, 3 Positano or 2 capri, 4 positano.

Are 5 nights in Positano and 3 in Capri too many, if we are using Positano as our base for exploring the AC?

We stayed in Naples for a week last year and loved it. I spent ages researching the right location to stay & was very pleased with my choice, the Hotel Executive. As I'd wanted it's just on the edge of the historic centre so easy to walk to most places, just round the corner from a street which most bus routes use (for further flung sights like the catacombs & Capodimonte), and a 10 minute walk from an airport bus stop, the Teatro San Carlo and the dock for hydrofoils to the Amalfi Coast & the islands. The hotel is not fancy but was fine for us - we paid €114 pn b&b for a superior double room in May/June.
I considered the Pinto Storey which sounds possibly more charming but I thought it was too far out of the centre. If I were you & only had 6 nights I'd spent 3 in Amalfi (better connections if you're travelling round a lot) & 3 in Naples. |
Hi N,
This might be the first time someone has reported good advice from a TA. :) >I have heard that Naples is a little seedy. < That's correct, but it shouldn't stop you from spending a night or two. Go see a couple of Loren/Mastroianni movies. ("Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow" is a good one.) This hotel has gotten good reviews: www.costantinopoli104.com/ ((I)) |
Hi JJ,
No. ((I)) |
We loved Positano. We also stayed in Ravello which was a short drive (1 hour) from Positano. It was beautiful.
