staying in Civita in Italy
Please tell me of your experience staying in Civita in Umbria. How far is it from Lucca in Tuscany and from Rome? Is there rail service nearby?
|
www.mappy.com will show you distances and rail information
You can also do a google search of the city names and there's usually a tourist board type website which tell you how to reach the city ie; by bus or by train etc.. |
Are you talking about Civita di Bagnoregio? If so, it's about 10-12 miles on the outskirts of Orvieto. I don't think there is rail service there, and I wouldn't really stay there, maybe spend a couple of hours. It is worthwhile to visit, though. ((b))

I believe that the best place to stay is not in Civita but in Bagnoregio:

Yes, Civita is very small and ancient--you may not want to stay there, but there was on small B&B. I would stay in Orvieto or nearby. It is about 3 hours to Lucca by rail from there via Florence.

Civita di Bagnoregio is in Lazio. If you do mean the Civita that is in Umbria (south of Norcia) it is a tiny hamlet, but you could stay in Norcia or my pick, the Abbazia di San Pietro en Valle just north of Ferentillo. Gorgeous area.

Hi Marcia,
Civita di Bagnoreggio (Umbria)is very charming, but tiny, tiny. When we were there in 2000, only 25 people were left living there. There is definitely no train service to the town, because the only way to get there is by foot across a long walkway/bridge that gets a bit steep at the end. As others have said, it's a great place for a visit but not really to stay. |
If you're talking about the Civita that Rick Steves touts, forget it.
|
Civita di Bagnoreggio is actually just over the border from Umbria in Lazio. It is worth seeing. ((b))

We were staying in Rome. You can take a train to Orvieto, then a bus to Bagnoregio, then either a shuttle or walk to the footbridge across to Civita di Bagnoregio. It's an interesting place to walk around in for an afternoon, but I probably wouldn't want to spend a night there. It was a very enjoyable day trip.

On the other hand, staying in Orvieto is a real treat, IMHO. Rail service to Rome is easy from Orvieto.
