Staying in Alsace?
Hi we have 4 nights/days in alsace. should we just stay in Strasbourg for all 4 and use it as a base or move around? would like to see Nancy, Colmar, spend some time in smaller communities than large city. would like to go into germany for a day? would like to stay in a chateau one or more nights? bed and breakfast? any suggestions?
thanks all. you have been so helpful in the past with this trip |
Will you have a car or will you be taking buses/trains?
I was in Strasbourg and Colmar in April. I took the train from Paris, stopped in Strasbourg for a few hours, and then on to Colmar where I spent the night. Both are nice towns. Colmar feels/probably is a little smaller. (Strasbourg has trams; Colmar doesn't and thus feels more like a small town. European Parliament also meets in Strasbourg; when it does, good luck finding a cheap room. Without a car, you can get to Freiburg im Breisgau in Germany easily from both towns. There's cheap direct bus service from Strasbourg via Meinfernbus.de . From Colmar, there's an easy bus/train connection that takes a little over an hour. |
We just got back from a weeks stay in Riquewihr and lived it - but you would need a car...

My suggestion would be to base yourself in or near Colmar for all four nights. From there you can easily go to Strasbourg, Freiburg, and the Wine Route villages.

We spent a couple of nights in Strasbourg and a couple more in Ribeauville and loved all of it, especially Ribeauville (and our hotel there, the Hostellerie des Seigneurs de Ribeaupierre) which is small, quaint and an easy base for much of the Wine Route villages. Strasbourg is much more of a big city, but still charming, as is Colmar. A beautiful part of France, best seen once you leave Strasbourg by car.
