Staying at Villa Saint Martin int the 10th in paris, some feedback please!
 

Hello, we are a group of 4 ladies staying in Villa Saint martin in Feb. 2009. Anyone stayed there, and is it a good area to walk back from gare d est to the hotel? thanks in advance pj

this is from the website, but there is another thread right now suggesting not to stay in the 10th, because of prostitues and the red light district of rue denis, especieally between gare de l'est and gare d'nord, so bumping this to the top, thanks cigalechanta

Hi, a few weeks ago we stayed at an Ibis hotel about 2 mins away from the Villa St Martin. To walk from Gare de l'Est to the Villa St Martin is about 5 mins and another 5 mins further on if you want to walk along the Canal St Martin. We ate one night at a nice restaurant on the canal called La Marine (kitchen opened at 8pm and it was very popular).

The area around the hotel was fine, we didn't see anything to be worried about but we weren't out really late either.

We walked late at night from Gare du Nord to the Ibis (just near your hotel) and it was fine too. I don't think I'd wander around there on my own late at night though.

I should add that we have previously stayed in the Marais in Paris (near the Seine) and thought the Marais area was much nicer than the area near Gare du Nord and Gare de l'Est. If it's only for a night or two it doesn't matter much but if you were going for longer, I'd maybe pick somewhere closer to the Seine.

Hi, Villa Saint Martin has gotten good reviews on tripadvisor, it is for 3 nights a package deal with gate 1. Thanks for the restaurant referral. PJ

Hi, just a thought as you are 4 ladies and ladies usually love to shop - are you into cheaper, budget type stores?

If so, there is a big Tati store, about 20 mins walk north of Gare de l'Est. It's a number of shops all next to each other, most interconnect, and they sell really cheap clothes, toiletries, shoes, kitchenware etc. There is also a Metro stop right near the store if you wanted to visit but not walk up there. There are other Tati stores in Paris as well, listed on their website.

'If you like shopping and do not have enough money to visit Cartier or Chanel, Tati is where the French go. There is a real big Tati in Barbes but there are several others all in Paris. You can find them at La Republique, Temple and Opera among others. They are open form 10:00 to 19:00 on weekdays and from 9:15 to 19:00 on saturdays.

Just keep in mind, it's really cheap stuff, often overflowing bins and stuff on the floor but I've found some good stuff there a few times. Can be good if you like a rummage.

thank you for the bargain shopping tip! I just found out the oldest chocolate store is close by villa saint martin hotel, Le Furet Tanrade, so another place to add to the ever growing list!
