Stay in Sorrento or Positano?

My husband and I are planning a 3-day trip to Amalfi Coast for March 2001. We want to tour Pompeii, the coast and the islands. What city is the best to stay in? Sorrento or Positano. Sorrento seems more centrally located, but I haven't heard great things about it. Please let me know your experience, and if you can recommend places to stay. Thanks!

If you plan on using the trains much, definatly stay in Sorrento. If you are going to have a car, Positano is prettier and more up scale. Also remember that the ferries and hydrofoils to Capri and Ishia are from Sorrento and the private circumsesuviana rail if from Sorrento. Have a great trip.

Sorrento more convenient, Positano more stunning. You'll have to choose between ease of mobility and beauty of setting.

PLEASE, do yourself a favor and stay in Sorrento. You won't be sorry. There are some MARVELOUS hotels perched all along the coast, it is so centrally located to everything you want to see. The shopping has really improved and its just a great "town", not as touristy nor as expensive as Positano. Positano, on the other hand, is stacked, crowded (in season, of course) and more expensive all around just because its "Positano". There's not alot to it, so on down time theres nothing going. I hope helps in time. Have a wonderful trip.

Agree with all previous replies: Stay in Sorrento. It is marvelous. And very convenient. Positano is just a tourist town--Sorrento is for living. And try their pizza. Stupendous!

first of all, there ARE ferries to Ischia and Capri. Positano is beautiful and more central to other places as well. I tthought that Positano was the perfecdt place to stay.

Thre are no ferris in March from Positano tot he islands. Positano should not even be an option if you wnat to tralkve to the palces you indicate by public transport.

I am looking for a hotel in the Naples-Sorrento area that has an indoor pool.
I read that the Sorrento Palace does. Did anyone have information about this hotel or do you know of any other hotel with this facility?
