I also think you should stay in Nice and visit Eze. We went there this past summer and we really loved the village of Eze. It was gorgeous. We took a train there, however we had to catch a cab up to actual village of Eze. I know there is a pathway to walk to get up to Eze without getting a cab. However, we just wanted to get there and not worry about finding the pathway, so we took a cab. I think it cost 60 Euro, but someone else got off the train with us, so we split the cost with them.

We stayed in Cannes for our visit which had great beaches. (sandy, not pebbles) So, I think a day trip to Cannes to spend a day on the beach would be fun.

Forgot to add, take the bus. All local cities, Cannes, Monte Carlo, Grasse, Eze, etc. are 1 Euro each way. Wife loved Grasse for a day trip. The perfumeries were interesting to her and the town is really quaint. One half day should do here if you go early. You might be able to get two towns in. I would stay away from the train station. To many pickpockets around. Really crowded and you are just asking to be robbed. The trams are the same. Really crowded during the day and pickpocket heaven. If you do go the tram/train way, be SURE to have all valuables under your clothes in a secure pouch.

Nice is one of our favorite cities in Europe. However, if you can spare a few hours a trip to Monte Carlo on the bus is fun, and the scenery en-route is outstanding. If you are looking for a simple inexpensive hotel in a prime location, check out the Hotel Rex in downtown Nice.

We liked the Hotel le Grimaldi in Nice: http://www.le-grimaldi.com/

It is a very nice boutique type hotel in a good location for walking around Nice. If you would like more information, I can post our trip report.

We enjoyed Nice.

Stay in Nice. A lareg - and ancient - city with tons of great things to see/do and also a transport hub to see other towns along the coast and up in the hills.

Monte Carlo is fun for an evening - if you bring the clothes and spend the money to do the James Bond thing in the casino (best when there are a lot of large yachts in the harbor). Otherwise just the palace and a very expensive town.

We were on the bus in March and it was crowded but not bad. Both of us commented that the bus must be a zoo in the summer. Don't know what it would be like in September but it's certainly the cheapest way to get around.
