When I visit the city I don't stay in New Jersey.

if it's not a budget consideration, then there's no way I'd stay anywhere but in Venice proper.

the further reaches of Cannarregio, up by the Arsenale, might suit, but honestly it's really easy to escape the crowds so long as you steer clear of San Marco and the main "drag" between San Marco and Ferrovia. we rented an apartment round the back of the Campo San Bartolomeo, and found it very easy to get away from the hurley burley.

I am glad that you are staying in Venice. It would not be fun if you happen to be there when there is a boat strike.
