Stay in Donegal or Sligo?
We are a family of six traveling to Ireland in August. We will visit Sligo because one daughter is introduced in Yeats for English lit research, but most of us also want to see Donegal because some ancestors were from there. I want to find 3 rooms for us in small hotels or larger B&Bs that are located close to or within town centers. (Three of our group are teens to mid-20s, and want to do pubs, music, maybe theater, etc.) I don't us want to be out in remote areas, no matter how wonderful a secluded castle may be! What can anyone suggest between staying in Donegal v. Sligo, and any particular places in both towns, or the road between, to recommend for lodgings, meals, theaters, pubs, historic sites of interest, etc.!
Thanks very much!

I preferred Donegal Town to Sligo. Although all of Donegal is kind of 'off the beaten path', Donegal Town is a lively little place. We stayed at Island View B&B which was about a 10 minute walk from the center of town. We were also traveling with two people in their 20s who enjoyed the pubs and then had an easy walk home. Donegal Castle is right in the middle of town. Mount Errigal Arts Festival may be going on throughout Donegal while you're there.

There's a beautiful place to stop for a bite between Sligo and Donegal. It's called Smuggler's Creek in the tiny village of Rossnowlagh. Located right on one of the most gorgeous stretches of beach!

Staying near Sligo offers you a wide range of facilities (see www.gulliver.ie for accomodation options). The town of over 20,000 is attractive with a good mixture of the old and the new, including ancient monuments,a theatre,a lot about Yeats,a good selection of restaurants, beautiful scenery and access to south Donegal for day trips or across the border to County fermanagh which is another place worth visiting.
