Stay in Delphi vs Galaxidi?
Hello!
My husband and I (age 28) are doing a tour of the Peloponnese/Central Greece with a rental car for about a week (and we're also doing a week in the islands).
My question is - should we stay in the city of Delphi, or, since we have a car and don't love too much of touristy/commerical feel, should we sleep in Galaxidi as a base for seeing ancient Delphi? And any recommendations as to where mid/low-range to stay?
(Actually, I have the same question about Olympia - sleep in the city or somewhere nearby?)
Thanks in advance,
Suzanne

I'm not familiar with Galaxidi, but my husband and I did a couple of days in the Peloponnese (specifically to see Delphi and Olympia) in 2000 along with Santorini. We were in our early 30's at the time.
We drove to Delphi, spent the night at the Hotel Acropole, and then saw the sites in Delphi the next day. As my records indicate, we paid $61 USD for a night. The room was clean and quite adequate with a view overlooking fields and fields of olive trees, as I recall. We thought it was fine (and we are pretty particular).
We then drove to Olympia, saw the sites, and ended up driving to Tolo to spend the night before heading back to Athens. We stayed at the Tolo Hotel, which was on the beach and also an adequate hotel ($64.47/night).
I didn't feel like any of the places we stayed were really touristy or commercial. Tolo was a bit touristy but only because it's on the beach, but I felt most of the "tourists" were Greek and not "foreign tourists." =)
Anyway, hope this helps alittle.

Since you have a car, I think you should stay in Delfi. It's a great place to be after the day-trippers all leave. I arrived in Delfi late afternoon. All the busses were clearing out. There were very few people visiting the ruins.
There's something special about wandering around a very famous site after the day-trippers are gone.
The next day when I left Delfi for a day trip, I passed all the tour busses going into town. Returning late in the afternoon, I passed the tour busses leaving Delfi.
I stayed at this hotel in October last year.
Delfi - Hotel Varnossos 55 a night breakfast included
Luckily I had a room at the back. It had the most beautiful view from the hillside of Delfi out over the valley filled with olive trees to the sea. A/C (extra cost I think) though not needed. Continental breakfast of breads, jams, butter and hard boiled eggs.
Here's a link to my trip report where I mentioned this hotel:
