Stay in Capri or AnaCapri?
 

My husband and I are going to stay in Capri for two nights as part of our trip. I'm confused as to where the "better" area is to stay. I have "tentative" reservations at Caesar Augustus in Anacapri, but was wondering if staying closer to the Piazzetta would be better as far as things to do. Please also recommend hotels.....

In my personal opinion, yes stay in Capri near the piazetta. Some will say that Anacapri is more "remote" and "real". True. But if that's what you're looking for, why go to Capri in the first place? The Piazetta is what Capri is all about in my opinion. I wouldn't want to take the bus to get back and forth at night.

We are also starting to look at hotels in Capri town. What's a comfortable, well-situated place for 3 people at 250E or less per night? Anybody?

Or should I just wedge a crowbar into my wallet and go for broke?

I agree with Patrick, and recommend staying in Capri over Anacapri if you prefer more energy. It's easy enough to get to Anacapri by scary bus, which runs back and forth reasonably late.

The hotel we just stayed in I would not recommend, only because it needed some repairs (which may have been done by now). It was certainly in a great location and the room was nice. But, we used the pool (with permission) at Le Syrene, which is very central, and the hotel (and definitely the pool) I would highly recommend. Hello. I think it depends on how you plan to spend your time. If you want to do lots of exploring, wandering the streets, shopping, etc., you would be better off in Capri. If you want to sit by the pool and enjoy an incredible view, you can't do any better than Caesar Augustus. We stayed at Caesar Augustus in July, and the hotel is really stunning, but it is a bit remote. Also, they do not provide shuttle service to town and back (from their website, I thought they did). They only provide shuttle service to and from the port, which is nice in terms of getting luggage in and out, but not at all helpful in getting to Capri, since the port is way down at the bottom of the island (obviously), Capri is close to the middle, and Anacapri is at the top. Anyway, the setting at C.A. is lovely and it truly has the best view of any of the hotels on the island, in my opinion. But, if you want to be able to walk to the shops and restaurants of Capri, C.A. is not really convenient. When we were there, I checked out several of the other hotels, for future reference (we will definitely go back), and none were perched right over the edge of the view like C.A. is, except possibly the Punta Tragora (but it has gotten mixed reviews). I looked at the Casa Morgano, the Scalinatella, the Quisianna, the Brunella, and the Capri Palace (in anacapri), and they were all situated further inland than the Punta Tragora and the C.A., so you had to look out over some scrub brush and grass to the sea. The C.A. juts right out over the water, and the view makes you dizzy. For that reason, I think we would stay there again, but I might also consider the Punta Tragora. It was not at all quiet- there were lots of kids in the small pool and it had a sort of 70's decor, in my opinion, but it would be much more convenient to town.

I've been to Capri a few times and have always stayed in Capri town. I think that's the most convenient location for exploring the island, shopping and dining. My favorite hotel is the Villa Brunella, which, even if it isn't right on the water, has spectacular views, a great restaurant and large, comfortable rooms. Mr_go, I think it may be more than 250 Euro a night, but it's worth it.

A 2nd. vote for Ceasar Augustus in Anacapri. My husband and I thought this was the most beautiful view we've ever seen. The day we did go into Capri, it was loaded with so many people it was hard to move from store to store - 1 day there was enough for us. Whereas Anacapri is more like Italy - we walked into the heart of the city where the locals lived and found it peaceful and relaxing.
I will say one thing, the bus ride down the island was a hoot!

While Capri has more going on, you can't beat the chair ride up the mountain top (where you MUST have a limoncello) from Anacapri. If you think Anacapri has views, wait until you get up there!! Even my teen son was impressed.

sherristieg - You didn't mention what time of year you're going to be there. As mentioned in the high season, it might be preferable to be in Anacapri away from the crowds. Otherwise you'd be better off in Capri than Anacapri in the off/shoulder season.

There are so many great hotels, you'll need to give more of an idea of what you're looking for in order to help.

Another way to look at that "crowds" problem, Sneezey.
Most people who stay in Anacapri end up spending much of the daytime in Capri, then stay in Anacapri at night. That means they'll be encountering the crowds during the day when they are mainly in Capri. At night, Capri is delightfully uncrowded.
On the other hand many people who stay in Capri, end up visiting Anacapri and other parts of the island during the day and returning to the main piazzeta area at night -- again, avoiding the crowds.
