Stay in Anacapri or Capri town?
 

We will be going to Capri in May and staying for two nights. For beauty and convenience should be stay in Anacapri or Capri town. Or does it really make any difference?

I stayed for 2 nts in Anacapri, but I would NOT recommend the hotel I chose. It was the Bella Vista, old and tired, horrid breakfasts, but nice staff.

I think there are about equal sighteeing and strolling in both locations. Anacapri is less $$ overall, not quite as jammed with people as Capri.

In Anacapri I strolled and discovered the beautiful Chiesa di St. Michele with its famous tile floor depicting the Garden of Eden. Definitely worth a visit! Also rode up the chairlift and enjoyed the views and a gellato. If I had more time, I would have hiked back down.

In Capri I hiked up to Villa Jovis, which is a pretty good hike, but a beautiful chance to get away from the crowds and walk through the lovely "real" neighborhoods of Capri. Such villas!!! I also did a small boat tour around the island which was the highlight for me.

Riding up and down on the tiny bus is not bad, but you are packed in like sardines. My trip was mid-Sept and the tour groups in Capri were a real negative. Nearly got run over by the two story baggage carts wheeling thru town more than once....

Very high priced boutiques in Capri. Buying anything depends on your income level!

If I ever visited Capri again (probably not as there are too many other wonderful places) I would have a private boat take me directly to Marina Piccola (avoding the hoards at Marina Grande) and I would park myself in a lovely villa for a few days. Honestly I wouldn't bother trying to do anything else!

I think this is hard to say on a categorical basis. I would look more at the relative advantages and disadvantages of specific properties in the first instance, rather than get fixated on either Capri town or Anacapri.

Ekscruncy, I was reading in your previous post that you stayed at Il Sogno in Anacapri. How did you like it? We are thinking of reserving it with the seaview room.

ekscrunchy----I checked out your website suggestion and I want to be there. Since Capri is on my "bucket list", I'm watching these posts.

II never reached Il Sogno. We had spent the earlier part of the week in Ischia and instead of heading to Capri at the end of the week, we extended our stay on Ischia and then spent a night in Naples. But I hope to get there next year!

We spent 3 nights on Capri in September. We stayed at the Villa Sarah in Capri town. We loved both Capri and Anacapri. And we loved the Villa Sarah. It was above the town so out of the way of the day trippers. The late afternoons and evenings were much quieter than at mid day.

The Villa Sarah is a small, beautiful family-run hotel with a pool and wonderful views. The breakfast is delicious. The staff is lovely.

We found lots to do in both Capri and Anacapri. It is very easy to travel between the two by bus. Although the weather was exquisite the whole time we were there the Blue Grotto was closed the entire time. Most of those who have said they don't like Capri were there for the day only. By and large, those who wtay a couple of days have enjoyed it very much.
