Stay at Chania (Crete) for nearly a week?

Hi,

I'm going to visit Crete for about 6 days. I'm wondering whether it's a good idea to stay at Chania for maybe 4 days, and the rest in Heraklion or Agios? Actually I'll travel to Crete from/back to Athens by ferry.

Thanks,
Derek

If you want to split your time and see more of Crete, staying in Chania and somewhere else is a good idea.
Personally i don't like the areas that are near Heraklion, nor Heraklion as a city.
I think Agios Nikolaos would be a great area to stay, either for relaxing, or as a basis to explore the east of Crete, which is very beautiful.
If you have a car, you can reach easily the Toplou Monastery, Siteia, the Palm forest of Vai, Zakros and many more :)

We had a great stay in Chania, but then made the mistake of going to Heraklion for two nights before going on to Santorini. Never again, although the Palace of Knossos (spelling??) was definitely worth seeing.

Firstly, there is plenty to do around Chania for a week. I agree with clausar about the area around Heraklion; and I'm not even that fond of Ag Nik. I'd go further west, but it is a heck of a long drive. If it were me, and I was splitting it, I'd go to the south coast (I'd got to Paleochora, but that's even further west). Maybe Matala, or somewhere like that?

is it a good idea to book ferry tickets now? A little bit worried about the situation of Greece and strikes. We'll go there in early June.

Τhe 4th of June will be a bank holiday for the public sector
( Holy Spirit Day), and will be a long weekend, this will not affect Crete, but islands that are close to Athens.
On 1/6 and 2/6 ships going to these islands will be probably full, and on 4 and maybe even 5/6 Athenians will head back to Athens..

On 10/6 or 17/6 elections will take place in Greece ( The decision on which of two days will be taken in the next couple of days). This might affect boats going to Crete, as many Cretans might travel home from Mainland Greece to vote.....

Booking your tickets in advance if you should travel on one of these days wouldn't be a bad idea, otherwise you can wait and buy them in Greece.
