state opera vs national theater in prague

while we are in prague we are thinking of seeing rigoletto either at the state opera or the national theater. has anyone gone to this and is one better than the other in terms of performance, building, etc. also what style of dressis appropriate for the opera and i am very casual when i travel. thanks, michael

I would say that National Theatre is more impressive.
It is expected that you will dress appropriate, but if you will come not too casual dressed (absolutely not Nikes or a T-shirt) than you will be allowed.
Anyhow you can check for links to both theatres on my website about Prague: http://home.tiscali.nl/jhadam/Prague.html
Anyhow have a nice time in Prague.

I have been to both halls, and seen operas at both, though I've never seen Rigoletto. Both places will put on good productions, and, of course, any subtitles will be in Czech. I love the National Theater for it's grandeur & location, but the State Opera is a very ornate & special hall, also. Both are worth seeing, but if I had to choose one, I'd probably go to the National Theater. It also has some amazing art/frecso type paintings on the walls. Expect long intermissions, since the Czechs drink champagne (at very low prices) & go out on the balconies overlooking the Prague skyline.
As for dress, some of the Czech women wear gowns to productions, but you will see tourists dressed in "neat casual". Enjoy!

Right across from the National Theater is the historic Cafe Slavia. Beautiful inside. Food gets mixed reviews, but I love it there. I had a great vegetarian dish, and also tried the goulash. The place also has a nice bar.

I have tickets to Swan Lake at The National on October 1. Looking forward to our visit to Prague, I'm leaving in a week. Will post a trip report when I return.
