DH is on board to learn how to drive a manual. A friend of ours with a manual is willing to both teach him and loan him his car so he can practice. Better to just bite the bullet!

Good for him! It will be scary at first (hubby did the same for our first trip to france) but when you are forced to do it you pick it up quickly. The drive from Ravenna to Urbino will be a good easy drive to practice...the autoroute is fine once you get going, and the roads in le marche aren't busy so shouldn't be too intimidating!

I think it's a good idea to take the train to Ravenna. That way you start in a quieter area and having driven, biked (yes, biked) and trained that route - I'd take the train.

The drive from Ravenna to Urbino is lovely, as I recall.
