Starbucks

The Italian newspapers are reporting that Starbucks is coming to Italy - initially in Milan.

What is the world coming to? Coffee in paper cups?

We saw a dunkin donuts in Nuremberg. I can't see why anyone would want to go there except for the free wifi.

Coffee in paper cups? Ever ride the train in Italy?

Sadly the young Italians will flock to Starbucks, just as other young people flock to it throughout Europe.
It took Starbucks a long time to open a place in the Netherlands, despite being head-quartered here, but when they finally did it was amazingly popular. We aren't at the Starbucks on every street corner state yet though, thank goodness.

Clean, modern and convenient restrooms!

The public don't usually get to choose who sets up shop anywhere. The local council do - they grant the permissions/set rates and rents. Thus independant cafes often can't afford to set up in the more desirable areas. People will use Starbucks because it's there and they are thirsty and/or because they want somewhere to hang out with pals. Exactly as they would if it were a completely different chain. The fact that people fill a cafe or bar or restaurant isn't proof that they explicitly wanted that chain or love it to bits.
