Stansted Airport to Oxford

Hi, Can someone please tell me the quickest way to get from Stansted Airport to Oxford by Public transportation and the cost or website? Thanks very much. Joan

No mode will be quick - it simply is not a quick journey

Thank you. You helped us decide that it will be cheaper and faster to rent a car. Joan

Don't build up too many hopes of a car being much faster.

If it really is Oxford you want, it'll probably take you about as long to find wherever you're headed for, discover you can't get to it by car, rearrange, take the car back to the hire company and get back to where you're staying as the bus from Stansted.

And it's virtually impossible, even in decent traffic, to do the drive itself - forgetting the time to hire the car and cope with Oxford - in less than 130 minutes.

If you're definitely flying into Stansted and you don't have to go to Oxford, could you substitute Cambridge instead? Tons easier to get to from Stansted.
OTOH, if Oxford is really where you want to go, maybe consider a flight that takes you into a different airport--Heathrow, for example.

Even with Sat Nav & a native guide,
getting to anywhere in Oxford requires a large dose of luck - unless you are walking or cycling

as for driving between Stansted and Oxford it's a 2 hour journey - plus the time to collect the car.

And I can't see how it's going to be cheaper

Great news! There is a new service that is direct (no stops) from Oxford to Stansted and back. They only sell roundtrip tickets but if you book at month in advance it is 20 pounds for roundtrip. Check it out here: http://oxford2stansted.com/

Thank you all for your replies. We're actually visiting a friend in Kidlington, near Oxford, and will need the car for the rest of our trip, so adding 2 days to the rental is cheaper than the bus. According to the Via Michelin site, it's 1 hour 44 minutes by car, mostly on highways. Plus, our friend could avoid picking us up in Oxford. Any other suggestions or advice will be appreciated.

"According to the Via Michelin site, it's 1 hour 44 minutes by car" - and I have a bridge in Brooklyn you can buy very cheap!

Not to be flip -- but visitors normally must add between 30% and 40% to the drive times on any of the mapping sites. And the drive from Stansted to Oxford is not fun even IF you do know every mile of it. Are you flying in long-haul -- or just in from the continent?

If you are flying in transatlantic -- driving from Stansted to Oxford would be nearly impossible due to the complexity of the route and jet lag.

Not necessary - there's a bus every half hour from Oxford station to Kidlington (no 20/28).
