From http://www.airwise.com/airports/euro.../STNtran1.html - - and for your future reference, the Airwise website can answer questions like this for you, regarding most of the major airports in Europe (and around the world).

=================================
The Airport approved taxi company is Airport Carz. Advance bookings accepted on Tel +44 (0)1279 662444.

Journey time to central London is around 70 minutes. Standard charges apply 24 hours a day.

Fare: approx 80 GBP to central London.

========================

The ryanair.com website - - http://www.ryanair.com/dest/london_around.html - - adds the following about roadwork-associated congestion/delays affecting travel (by road), whether in taxi, coach or driving yourself:

==========================

sted is one of the fastest growing airports in Europe with about 15 airlines flying to over 90 destinations. There are two main rail services between Stansted and Liverpool street station in central London and numerous train services to major towns and cities in the Midlands and the North. Coach services are regular and numerous, offering destinations all over the UK, in central London and also at Gatwick and Heathrow airports. Work has commenced on new slip roads on the M11 motorway to offer better access to and from the airport. However, while in progress, this work is causing periods of congestion and extra time should be allowed for journeys.

=========================

Best wishes,

Rex
[email protected]
We've booked a car trip from Stansted to our hotel in London through Eddie Manning at www.limo.co.uk. Rates are 74 GBP for a car and 89 GBP for a minivan, with driver meeting you inside terminal, etc.

Thats funny - the Transfers cost twice as much as the Ryanair ticket I was thinking of buying!!
19.99 + 13.99 Tax

There are good train/coach connections from Stansted. There is no reason to take a cab.

I'll second the opinion that riding with Eddie Manning is a good idea - - clearly better value than a taxi - - assuming you have the number of people to justify it.

I know nothing about using the train to Stansted; I have gone there by Eddie and by coach (from Heathrow) - - and driven FROM there by rental car. One reason that I posted the info about highway congestion is that taxi, car/driver and coach would all be susceptible to that.
Agree with Janis. Why fight the traffic into central London (even in a taxi) whe you can take the train right from the airport? Get your taxi when you arrive at the train station in London.
To clarify why I said train/bus - there is a train directly to London, but on Sundays they do rail maintenance and substitute a coach on the route. But either way it would be a fraction the cost of a car or taxi.

Really there is no reason to get a cab. Stansted is a great airport, and you can get a lift right onto the station platform and the train goes non-stop to Liverpool Street. I think the round ticket is £20. Who'd take a cab? If you need to go far from liverpool Street, save your money for a cab there.
