I remember very well when she defected, but I had no idea she denounced the US later and went back to the USSR, then came here a year later. Nice of us to take her back...

Dayenu, thank you for sharing that historical tidbit. As I recall Svetlana was dark haired and rather attractive when she landed in the US, lo those many years ago.

I remember when she arrived in the US and that arrival caused an absolute sensation in the media. Along with the smuggling out of "Dr. Zhivago" a few years prior we were all entranced with the Russian menace.

Yes today's lengthy article in the NYTimes was spellbinding - what a life with so many turns - a movie in the waiting - I did not find her that admirable but rather self-serving in many of her actions (like disavowing her pop and Communism then writing two autobiographies dwelling on Stalin's life) but the story as a whole was riveting.
