Stalheim Hotel, Norway: Good Stop on the Nutshell Tour?
It sounds like a good idea to break up the Norway in a Nutshell tour from Oslo, by staying the night at the Stalheim Hotel, then continuing on to Bergen the next day. Any tidbits about this hotel? The scenery sounds breathtaking.

Yes, I would spend a night there. Doing it all the way to Bergen is OK...but you would get to that Stalheim hotel about 3 pm or so, and would have a nice relaxing evening, nice dinner, and spectacular scenery. I wish we had known to plan to spend the night.

The scenery from there IS breathtaking, and it is a great place to stop for the night. Not all of the buses that come up from the boat stop there (although most do), so make sure you get on one that does.

I am so glad we took the recommendations to take a break on the Norway in a Nutshell trip and stay at the Stalheim overnight (last July). After all the rushing on and off trains, boat, and the bus (whoa...what a ride through those hairpin curves!), it was wonderful to get off the bus with the mob, and then get to stay at this amazing hotel after the hoardes departed. The view is just breathtaking. The desk clerk said, "And you must be Ms. Andeesue"...such personal service. I loved the framed poster of Rooms with a View from Conde Nast Traveler that was hanging. It noted room 224 and we were in room 226. Fabulous! Exploring the gorgeous grounds, enjoying the dinner, listening to the pianist in the lobby later...such a nice contrast to the busy day we had (though I'm so glad we did NIAN). The next day we had a bus basically to ourselves (and the pianist!). Stopped in the next town to catch the train after we bought a few ski sweaters which were much less expensive than the ones we found in Oslo. Then we were off to Bergen. Thank you for all your tips, Fodorites! Our trip was so enhanced with all the great information I've garnered from you.

the hotel itself was pretty enough but I cannot reco the food. What we were served for dinner was completely bland and tasteless - and in large part unidentifiable - and the portions were nothing to write home about (and we are not big eaters - typically find that restaurants serve portions that are too large).

We did our own tour with a rental car spending quite a lot of time in the area, but had a wonderful one night stay at the Stalheim Hotel. I see in my journal, "for dinner we both had filet of reindeer -- the best "venison" we ever ate-- which was served with masses of assorted vegetables. Our starters of French onion soup rivaled any we've had in France. We spent most of the evening in the delightful bar chatting with the most pleasant Dutch bartender whose girlfriend's family owns the hotel. Before dinner I had my first dry Robroy in a long time -- perfectly made -- and after dinner he had us drinking everything from aguavit to a Dutch creation -- Borga (sp?)." I do remember it was a long drive up to the hotel, but yes the scenery was outstanding.
