This is probably not real helpful, but I went to Staffordshire 30 years ago and was charmed. I stayed with relatives in Tamworth. There were some lovely thatched roof homes that were still inhabited. We saw Tamworth Castle there.
We did a bit of driving in nearby areas and saw Warwick Castle (highly recommend), Chatsworth House, Leicester Cathedral. Drove through Nottingham Forest.
I wish I could give you up to date information, but the area is worth a visit, in my opinion.

As far as I know, the only time I visited Staffordshire was a day I spent visiting Lichfield last October. It was well worth a visit -- I toured the cathedral, attended evensong in the cathedral, visited the Samuel Johnson birthplace museum and Erasmus Darwin's (grandfather of Charles Darwin)home and wandered through the park where the statue of the captain of the Titanic is located.
Go to www.visitlichfield.com for an interactive accommodations listing. While it is an excellent site, I found that most B&B providers were not keeping their information up-to-date, and those that were up-to-date weren't responding to e-mails. I stayed in Birmingham and took the train in.

Hello,
I live fairly nearby there (south yorkshire); Alton Towers has everything you would expect from a big theme park, including a few quite scary white knuckle rides. It is massively popular, so if you are there during the UK school holidays, expect long queues to get on the most popular rides.
The driving in the staffs area will be no problem, neither will it be if you explore the surrounding areas (derbyshire and the peaks, nottinghamshire) The only issue with driving is if you head towards Birmingham. Here the roads can be very busy and personally I find them a bit rough-going. I'd recommend considering public transport if you are interested in Birmingham.
Let me know what you are interested in and I should be able to make some recommendations

I think that what you need to bear in mind is how close you are to several other counties, so rather than restrict your search just to staffordshire, also make sure you search tourist sites for adjoining counties.
Things that your daughter might like include the robin hood place in Nottingham http://www.robinhood.uk.com/
Peak Cavern in Derbyshire http://www.peakcavern.co.uk/ and while you are in Derbyshire, The Heights of Abraham at Matlock Bath http://www.heightsofabraham.com/.
In staffordshire there is another theme park - Drayton Manor, which I think has a zoo (there's also the brewery museum in Burton but perhaps she is a bit young for that! she might like the shire horses though)
Also remember you are very close to Stratford on Avon and therefore all the Shakespeare related sites
I'm afraid I'm not sure about accomodation in the area, I would suggest searching on line for cottages. I've used www.englishcountrycottages.co.uk in other areas and was happy with them.
Hope that helps

you've received so good info so far. Just one quick thought -- I don't think any of the rides/attractions at Alton Towers are geared to 1 yo's. Not that you shouldn't visit - but really for the adults. Sort of like going to Disneyland w/ a 1 yo. Mostly stroller time for the child.
